The crowds can be pretty overwhelming, so the best time is just before dark on a weekday. Also, I'd suggest combining it with another activity (like getting a hot chocolate nearby), since the whole experience can be overwhelming for a little one.

Did you mean the tree at Rockefeller Center?

The tree in Lincoln Center is very nice, and much less crowded than the one at Rockefeller Center, so you could go any time. Just avoid the times when shows at any of the theaters are about to start, around 7:00PM - 8:00PM.

For Rockefeller Center - at this point, there is not really a very good time. Weekdays and weekends are packed with tourists right up until Christmas. A good time of day might be around 4:30 or so. Most of the tourists will have been out all day, and are looking for dinner. The people who work in the area are still working, so they won't be in your way.

Don't expect too much from a three year old! I took my nephews who were 3 and 6 and they really didn't care about the tree. They enjoyed going to Central Park and FAO Schwartz much, much more!

Weekends in December become nightmarishly crowded in NY. I would recommend a weeknight (Monday through Thursday, NOT Friday). I recommend taking a bus or the ferry in, since it will still be crowded in the city, just not as bad as on Saturday.

Sundays are actually a little better than Saturdays, so Sunday might be the best option. If you go in around 3 PM, you can enjoy the daylight, maybe see some ice skating at Central Park first, and then go down to the Tree after grabbing a quick bite to eat. You can leave by 7 or 8, because by then it will be dark and you'll have seen the lights. Sunday is less crowded than Saturday because Saks and the other stores close by 6 PM instead of 9 PM.

Good luck and have fun!!!

I, too, have thought about this many a time. My son just turned 2 a few days ago & I was contemplating on taking him there but no matter what time or day of the week, it is very crowded and for a toddler it can be a bit overwhelming. I want so badly for him to see the tree & all the spectacular lights & decorations, but trust me on this they are not going to MISS it! They're too young - let's give them a lil' more time to get a bit older than try. For now I'm just going to get a bit creative & find some local towns where the residents truly know how to decorate their homes & take him out for lil' night rides throughout the city.

But there is one option (as far as traveling there), you can take a ferry from Jersey directly to midtown (less than a 10min ride). Once you arrive at the midtown terminal, there are free shuttle buses in front which shall take you directly to Rockefeller
Center (that's where the famous Xmas tree is) or to Lincoln Center as well. Kids 12 & under ride for FREE during the holidays! So check it out - NY Waterway!

Now is right but he probably he won't remember much in the future. If you are are a resident go any time. If you have to make the trip, save the money you will spend for three or four years.

Saturday afternoon. Workers are at home so crowds are much much smaller than weekdays in NYC. This is not exactly something you can drive into the city and do.

Probably when it isn't too busy, since you don't want him/her to be distracted.

Merry Christmas
(Screw anyone who dares to call it a Holiday Tree)

I don't think that it matters as long as she is with you. Time doesn't stop me from doing anything but you can stop yourself in time. I like to have the option to do things at different times and to be at places at different times. i don't think that the time matters as long as you keep her safe and warm. Night time is so beautiful, she will just love the lights.
