Generally, its stationery targets placed at different range increments. usually it's 50 meters, 100 meters, 150 meters, etc. out to 300 meters. Sometimes you get lucky and have "Pop Up" targets where the target appears for a few seconds at these same distances. There is also a 50 meter course where you shoot only at 50 M but the targets are different sizes to simulate distances. I have been on only one range where the soldiers are in trenches to pull the targets down and score them and it is the firer that moves back to get the distances needed. Hope this helps.

Standard weapon training uses a regular target range with paper targets. Specialized weapons training will utilize a "Hogans Alley" type of installation as well. A mockup of a town with pop-up targets, changing lighting and environmental conditions. Hogans Alley trials are fun but exhausting. You get so into the moment, it is like running the NY City Marathon.

For a qualification range you either shoot plastic pop-ups or paper targets. I've heard the guys in combat arms fire at moving targets, as well.
