They looked for a new comercial route to Asia, In fact the first time they reach America. They thought that they have been reach Asia turning the earth to west but what they had been found was a new territory. When they traveled along the old comercial routes from the East, from Asia, carrying goods.They had to pay taxes on the borders of all countries they crossed. So they thought it would be a good idea travel to west to reach Asia.

Gold was the one great attraction.
Then some dreamers were actually seriously looking for the fountain of youth though I doubt anyone would have financeda trip for that purpose only.
As time went on, the idea of "converting the natives" was put forward as a justification for the expeditions. I don't know if the church contributed to financing the expeditions or not, but it is possible.

There were many reasons, too many to be listed here. But here are just some of the major ones:

Exploration
Seeking wealth (gold and/or land)
Seeking youth (the fountain of youth)
Political & religious persecution (running from it)

There was a belief that the beaches were litered with gems and gold. It was also a time of religious persecution and expansionism.
