It depends on the centre frequency and bandwidth of the IR detector. Glass will absorb certain IR frequencies, very often IR detectors use this as they do not wish to see beyond windows which would cause false alarms.

they are not really motion sensers but they sense light. if the light goes through the glass then they can detect it. So say a shadow through a glass alters the light in a room the sensers will detect that also evan though nothing was in the room. to avoid this they alter the sensativity of the sensers. so large amounts of light are detected not just shadows.

Depends. It could refract it. If the sensor is directly against the glass it should work.

yes, and they also bounce off mirrors. It's pretty cool.

PS: actually, the post above has a good point. if it's too thick it wont work.
