A disk image. Insted of carrying data about files, it carries exactly what the disk will look like down to the dark spots and light spots.

In common use, an "ISO" is a file that contains the complete image of a disc. Such files are often used when transferring CD-ROM images over the Internet. Depending on who you're talking to, "ISO" may refer to all disc image files or only certain kinds.

Going by the more restrictive definition, an "ISO" is created by copying an entire disc, from sector 0 to the end, into a file. Because the image file contains "cooked" 2048-byte sectors and nothing else, it isn't possible to store anything but a single data track in this fashion. Audio tracks, mixed-mode discs, CD+G, multisession, and other fancy formats can't be represented.

An ISO is an image file. You can burn many PC games and software as an ISO file. You can then play the games and install software without the need of the actually software CD/DVD. To load the ISO you need a CD/DVD emulator that will allow you to load and read the ISO file. This is called a virtual drive. The virtual drive will appear as a extra drive on your PC. You mount the image onto the virtual drive, then you can load what ever you want to. Alcohol 120% 120% allows you to create a ISO image file from CD/DVD, then load it on the virtual drive. This is useful for putting all your software and PC games on a few DVDs instead of having many CD/DVDs. Some PC games may require patching before the CD/DVD will play without the CD/DVD. Hope this helps.

.iso is an image file that contains image of the files to be burned onto CD or DVD. It's enough to drag an .ISO file onto an empty CD or DVD-R and a whole disk will be burned.
