Flying from California for New York nonstop (about 5-6 hours). Flying in December (for the holidays). Dog is an 11-month old puggle (half pug and half beagle). He was flown out to us in California from a breeder in Tennessee as a 12-week old puppy.

He is too big to carry on the plane.

How much does your dog weigh? I would find out if it is at all possible to fly with him in the cabin.

If you are going to have him fly in cargo, make sure that the airline has a climate controlled cargo area for pets that is controlled if the plane is on the ground or in the air!!! If there are delays (as there often are around the holidays) you don't want your pet to be suffering in the cold.

Make sure you have inspected the crate thoroughly for anything that the dog might be able to get hurt on. Be sure to have comfortable padding and bedding. The dog should have some access to food and water during that time, but not so much that he will have to use the bathroom.

Try and fly an airline with really good pet handling, like Continental.

Oh, and for extra safety, have your dog microchipped before you leave! Make sure the crate and the dog are clearly labeled, and that you personally have securely fastened the crate closed!

It is very safe to fly with your dog! However you may have only 1 or 2 choices for ailines. Yes, he must ride in the baggage compartment unless he fits in an airline approved carrier that fits under the passengers seat. He must also be in a carrier to ride in the baggage compartment. Just put something in the carrier that has your smell on it and that will help him feel safe. You must also try to feed him 4 hours before the flight and be sure to let him relieve himself before you crate him for the flight . Good journey!

I would leave the dog at home. He/she would be put under the plane with the baggage...no heat/ air conditioning, very loud and scary for your pet. You can get a sedative from your vet, but imagine how terrified the dog would be if it wakes up!

Small dogs can be brought on as a carry on and can be stowed under your seat. Samw with cats. AS for medium to large dogs they have to be put into cargo. Contact your air carrier and ask them about the procedures for your pet. They would be the best ones to know. I used to work at an airport and saw small dogs and cats all the time.

It's too cold to check him as baggage. You'll need to carry him on (buy him a seat) or fly Continental or some other airline that handles pets a lot. He will be warm and comfy.

If he'll fit in a dog carrier made for airline travel, you can take him as hand luggage. Otherwise, you'll have to check him as an animal - not baggage. You'll have to pay a fare for him.

If the dog is small and it can fit under your seat they will let you do that otherwise they do have to board them. My friend has a pug and it fits under her seat.

Can he fit under your seat?

If not I wouldn't put my dog in baggage....I've heard a lot of horror stories.
