Global warming will lead to a warmer climate in the uk with milder winters and hotters summers... Our agricultural producitivity will be enhanced and we will have a climate more similiar to the south of France.. Sea levels will rise but only a few areas of UK will be affected ( parts of london and East Anglia).. Why should we bother trying to cut down on carbon emmisions when the USA and china are actually becoming worse polluters.... the UK will be ok... China will have a lack of water .... Africa e.t.c...
but why should we care!! China and the USA do not care so let them wallow in their own mess in 20 years to come,, whilst the uk sit back with a better climate and adequate water resources.. until the big polluters take heed,, what is the point in the EU trying to make an effort!!! Global warming is going to have its effects on the world.. but i am lucky enough to live in a country where global warming is actually in broad terms going to benefit my country....

Effects of a change in ocean currents will be offset by an inrease in Global temperatue.. All of these "global greenpeace "hippies". the ones that keep going on about it are the ones who say increase in temperatures.. I think they would have made the British public aware of this aspect if it was likely to happen

Hey multibite: I dont give a damn what happens the rest of the world... go to bbc.co.uk and check to see how much sea levels will rise... Ok holland, pacific islands and Bangladesh will be seriously affected by this.. But it not on my doorstep.. why bother trying to make a change and damage our country`s economy with high fuel taxes and other "green " when the bigger polluters are ignoring the problem.. I want my country to have a competitive advantage.. (not to have the most expensive logistical and manufacturing systems in the world)

FOA: THe environmental students..
So UK water resourses will go down by 4%. Big deal.. you do know that we lose a lot of due to inefficiences in the water works..
And our Agricultural productivitiy will increase.. Because of hotter weather this year, we have had bumper maize and wheat crops. Who know... maybe in 2020 we might not have to grow maize under plastic anymore, sue to a more contential climate..!!

I recently saw an interview on Channel 4's 7pm news programme during the mid term elections in America.

Jon Snow was interviewing a leading Republican politician who was described as being one of President Bush's key advisers.

When asked what action the White House would implement to tackle Global Warming his answer deeply shocked me.

He said: 'The evidence for global warming is not compelling and we as an administration do not accept it. And even if we did believe that there was such a phenomena as global warming we would not be prepared to tackle it because to do so would jeapordise our competitive advantage. This is because our main rivals in China and India would ignore global warming and therefore gain a cost advantage over our companies in America.'

If, as he said, the USA, China and India are to ignore the effects of global warming why should we in Europe have to pay for it. As the questioner states a warmer climate in the UK will be a good thing. For one thing it will save me from having to keep going to places like Egypt during the winter months in order to get some sun.

Global warming does not mean that all places will be warmer. There will be shifts in climate patterns, a few places will get cooler, and a lot more will get a lot hotter. The UK is on the same latitude as the Hudson Bay, parts of Alaska, Vladivostok and Moscow. The reason for our unusually mild weather is the Gulf Stream, a current of warm water coming from the Caribbean that keeps our shores ice-free, and somewhere like Stranraer preposterously sub-tropical. Because of desalination of the Arctic Ocean cause by the great Siberian rivers flowing all year, rather than being frozen solid most of the time, the Gulf Stream is weakening. Some give it 20 years before it fails, some give it 50, but if and when it does, then our winter weather will be similar to other places on a similar latitude. Global warming may offset that somewhat, so best to compare the weather in Vladivostok over a number of years to see what we can look forward to. Our strange summer weather was caused by the Jet Stream drifting south. In the past, it hovered over Norway, giving rise to the classic Norwegian summer weather forecast where everywhere it was raining. A similar thing happened to Australia, where a shifting jet stream gave tropical monsoon rains over Southern Queensland and parts of NSW with disasterous effects. What brought it home to me was that some bloke swam to the North Pole. No human being has ever been able to do that before.

Higher Temperatures = More water evaporating. Eastern parts of the UK will become drier, thus less agriculturally productive.
With changes in temperatures there are changes in humidity and air pressure which will, in turn affect the weather systems across the UK, this is likely to result in less rainfall across the UK generally, and the South West will become a little drier, leaving East Anglia to be very dry and the current drought will get worse.
The supply of water in Eastern England will be very poor, experts has predicted there will be a 4% shortfall in 2020.
Sea levels will rise, but the BBC may not be a reliable source, try the Environment Agency or a 'green' charity for that data.
The UK will by no means be OK, if you consider that OK, then my friend you must be cold.

Something else to consider alongside Global Warming:
Unless nuclear power stations or renewable energy power-plants there will not be enough electricity generated from fossil fuels to meet UK demand.
The UK will eventually receive oil from Russia and Norway and Gas from Russia, the Russian government is in control of how much is exported and at what price, with Russia being the only source of Oil and Natural Gas for most of Europe they can make alot of money. Their president likes the fact that he is now in control of these valuable resources, don't expect them to use that power honestly.

I'm really saddened to see that someone has this attitude. For one thing, you don't know for sure that climate change will be good for the UK. Scientists may have made predictions, but remember that that is all that they are. They are not absolute certainties, and something unexpected could happen. Indeed, when you are dealing with something as potentially dangerous as climate change, it is not at all a good idea to be cavalier.

Whilst I agree that there are worse polluters than the UK, I certainly don't think that we should "let them wallow in their own mess in 20 years to come". We're all in this together, and we all need to come up with a workable solution. Giving up just because other countries don't seem to care is not good enough-it is a terrible attitude, but one I fear that many people share.

Instead of being negative and angry, we need to start putting our energy into something constructive, and make sure we're "doing our bit"-recycling, being less wasteful etc, and the government and companies need to make an effort too. Maybe that way we can encourage other countries to follow our example? Global warming and climate change are big issues that need to be addressed on all levels. Giving up is not an option!

How warm is warm enough? How do we put the brakes on? Is it possible for the climate to be in super-greenhouse state where it rains sulphuric acid? What if food chains are disrupted and flowers bloom at wrong time for insects? What if there are different/no insect pollinators? Will we have more human and livestock diseases - malaria/blue-tongue? Will we have environmental refugees/armies knocking on our door?

Point being that you don't know what effect increased temperatures are going to have on the UK and put yourself in a rosy, idealistic picture without really thinking it through.

Sure it's nice to have warmer temperatures, but the rate of change is way faster than previously observed through earth's history, giving rise to many questions about the outcome. I don't want to conduct this sort of experiment on the planet.

We need to "live in the real world" and sort it out and stop worrying about the size of our.....economies, armies, whatever.

China are working on their major problems (not that you hear much about that in the press), the USA will come around as soon as the oil man's out of power. The UK should lead the way, setting a good example and preparing the mindset to one of caring for our planet. We can continue to point the finger at other countries if so desired as we are cleaning up, but not instead of.

Here's a perfectly good selfish reason to stop global warming. One sure effect of global warming is a rise in sea level. If the world sea level rose by just one-half metre, 10 million people would lose their homes from needing to relocate inland. Many of these people are in some of the poorest countries in the world. Global political instability will occur from such a dramatic event necessitating the UK sending military forces around the world to maintain stability necessary for global trade. Poor people with nothing to lose take up suicide bombing and start attacking their neighbors for scarce resorces. At the same time, oil supply runs low causing disruptions in UK energy consumption forcing more military expeditions to secure enough energy for the UK. As more military force is being used on other countries, more terrorist groups are formed and increased attacks on the UK public begin. Bombings on buses, the Underground, and airplane hijacking become common events the same way Israelis today face suicide bombers on every corner of every street of every day.

Global warming benefits no one but the trees. People, even those in the UK do not benefit from a chaotic world constantly in crisis. The UK used to be the world superpower because of their mastery of world trade through their dominance of the seas. The path of world power and influence still reign for those in control of global trade. It would behoove the UK to remain engaged with the world and to work towards a stable future.

You are an optimist and pick the effects that are at most advantage of the UK. But, when "a few areas of UK will be affected (parts of london and East Anglia)", then this is not good for UK, I guess.

Global warming can also chance the way water in our oceans floats. This can eventually emerge another ice age, which is not very good option for the UK, unless you like ice, snow and coldnes.

Its stupid people like you who will contribute to the continued decline of mankind and his environment. So we get a few extra days on the beach (albeit the beach is now at the foot of the lake district hills or mount snowdon. There will be no food in the super markets no power from power plants to power the electricity for hospitals, homes, heating etc etc........... Many millions will die as a result. So you will just climb up a hill when the floods come will you getting a sun tan while everyone else drowns, no one benefits from global warming - wise up

If the Greenland ice sheet melts then the entire ocean current system will be disrupted and Northern Europe would freeze, so that's not really a warmer climate... It just depends on how quickly we can curb the CO2 emissions and start reforestation to sequester the carbon out of the air.

are you an imbecile!! it's because of people like you that not enough is being done to help stop the change. you have a very selfish attitude n if the world was full of people like you then we probably would not be where we are today, or perhaps not here at all. if you don't like the weather in England then leave! i don't think many will miss you!
