I'm 17 about to be 18 in two days. I worked for Harley Davidson and stole a ring that cost $143.00 (stupid i know) I'm being charge with a class 1 misdemeanor now and for the state of Virginia (inwhich i live) states the penalty for that is up to 12 months in jail or a fine of $2,500 i have never gotten in trouble before...or my record is clean rather so do you think i'll be going to jail? also can they charge me as an adult being that my court date is Dec. 5th and i turn 18 Dec. 3rd even though i commited the crime as a minor? wouldn't my record be cleared when i turn 18? sorry so many questions just a little worried!

The maximum fines are scary but people almost never get them unless they have an extensive criminal record.
Was the ring returned? If it was, expect probation and community service probably. If not you may have to repay the value of the ring and then get probation and community service. You will be tried as a youth. (They only try as adult for serious offences like murder). Here in Canada your record would be completely wiped out at 18 (sorry cant say for sure in USA).
The best thing to do is to talk to a lawyer (most courts have duty counsel there for free legal advice) and find out.

A misdemeanor is nothing to be so worried about.First offense you'll get probation. It doesn't matter if your a minor or adult this is a black mark on your record and will never go away.I know that you've heard of "He has a sheet as long as your arm" Well that means that every time you get arrested it goes on your record whether your convicted or not.
Use this as a learning exp. and try to keep youself out of the judicial system.Believe me when I say this once they get you they don't let go.How do I know,I made a mistake 20 years ago and have been on probation or parole ever since.
