"Seaman" in the US Navy is an enlisted rank (E-3), and "Navigotor " is a job position. In the submarine community to which I belonged, the Navigator was a LT (O-3) or LCDR (O-4). I don't know what is a "seaman navigator."

You might be confused with the enlisted speciality known as "quartermaster" (QM or ET rates). Quartermasters plot the ship's position on the chart and work with the Officer of the Deck to keep the ship in safe water and on course. It is very repetitive, mundane work.

I think you are referring to the Quartermaster rating in the Navy. It is a great job and entails keeping a log of all the ship's movements and events, assisting the Navigation Officer in maintaining the ship's position, winding all the ship's clocks, and standing watch on the bridge. It is a great job especially when you learn to navigate by the stars and planets. You spend much time on ships and always have a great view. I loved it!

It is a very responsible job. My son was a navigator in the US Navy. My ex was a Sea Captain for merchant ships.
