If you want to continue to color it, Paul Mitchell has recently reformulated their reds with no brown base, so if it fades it will fade on tone, meaning it may fade to a lighter red, not that ugly orange brown color. you can also ask your stylist to apply a clear coat, also made by Paul Mitchell, its called pm shines clear. this simply seals in the color for a little longer, and helps with shine.

Also, and I've learned this myself after dying my hair red and maintaining it last year, if you need a "filler"... Use two boxes of color. Place ONLY the colorant, not the developer, of the one in your hair for 15-20 minutes. Leave this on and mix up the other box as usual. Place on top of the colorant and time as normal for dying your hair. This doubles the amount of colorant on your hair and thus, saturates the strands while acting as a "filler". Salons have professional versions of this, but if you do it yourself, this is a way to make it work. I dyed my hair blonde forever... decided after my second child to do red and have maintained it well for over 3 years now. Remember the cardinal rule with dying... Lightening hair strips it and darkening hair puts pigments back in. So dying it darker does not harm the hair near as badly as bleaching. I would not recommend that before dying it red. You may end up with pink. although this is a pretty color, it's not for e everyone. Especially if red is what you're going for. Last but not least, be sure to use a very gentle shampoo and hydrating/sealing conditioner. I use biolage currently, but nexus humectrus is great too. Good luck!!!

If you use dyes like vegetable based ones such as Special Effects or Manic Panic you can add some of the dye to your conditioner and use after each hair wash - gives your hair a little top up each time you wash. Also wash hair in warm or cool water as hot water opens hair follicles and allows dye out - keeping hair follicle closed also helps create a great shine on hair.

You need to use color shampoos that enhance your color and refresh it in-between retouches and also helps to make the color last longer. Go to your legit hair salon and even tough the products cost more than other places, get good color made product theres alot out there red-ken, Paul Mitch, wella products, etc.

John Freida has a line called Brilliant Red. You can find it even at Wallmart, and it isnt too expensive. I use it & it seems to help my color last longer and protect against damage
