Fingerprint recognition systems make a map of 40 to 100 unique features of your fingerprint and then put it into a format that can be interpreted by a mathematical equation. These unique features are defined by the ridges (dermal papillae) on your fingertips that make up the arches, loops, and whorls of your fingerprint.

The devices do not store a copy of your fingerprint. The format in which the data is stored is encrypted, and different companies that make the devices use different mathematical formulas to interpret the data.

Finger print scanning technology is quiet a complicated subject, I am just putting it in simple words..

Every human has a unique finger print and it is of different pattern. Consequently, fingerprints are a unique marker for a person, even an identical twin. And while two prints may look basically the same at a glance, a trained investigator or an advanced piece of software can pick out clear, defined differences. The Finger print is scanned and stored in a Finger print scanner, and when-ever you press your Thumb on the scanner, it verifies the Pattern or your finger print with the stored finger print, if it matches, it lets you to proceed.

You can pick up a personal USB fingerprint scanner on PC keyboards, Mounse, Laptop Screen for your computer s guarded by high-tech biometrics and there are uses for Security purpose of your computer devices.

A fingerprint scanner system is done mainly two types,

1) it needs to get an image of your finger, and
2) it needs to determine whether the pattern of ridges and valleys in this image matches the pattern of ridges & valleys in pre-scanned images.

I have one, DONT like it, NEVER use it. You have to register your fingerprints when you first get your computer. However, if you have recently put lotion on your hands and i mean within the past few hours, it will not recognize your fingerprints. If you dont place your finger the exact same way it was when you registered, it will not recognize you finger, it takes me so long for the computer to recognize my prints sometimes that I have stopped using the scanner all together and just simply use my log in name. Really more trouble then they are worth.

a scanner takes a scan of the ridges of your print. segememnts the print into a code. then uses that code the same way as a password to unlock a program. It is usually more secure, because you can not make the code or bypass it.There is however always a way around things like this called hacking.it is illegal but can be done.
