Almost 6 years ago I received CCJ's for unpaid credit cards which I have paid off in full. I have run good accounts since, my bank have now given me a Visa Debit Card again and a cheque book but no one except for capital one will lend e anything at all.

Now I am older and more sensible, I would like to clean my record, but it seems impossible. I know people who went bankrupt just a couple of years ago who can already get credit.

What do I need to do? Can anyone advise?

Get details form the courts to show you paid the debts in full and then contact Experian to see how you get them removed from your record. From then get a carpital one credit card but pay it off on time and the wqhole balance if you can as the interest rate will be high. Try and get a catalogue and do the same and your rating will soon be repaired. The same thing happened to me now I'm a home owner with 3 buy-to-lets and more credit cards than I would like :-). Trust me it works.

Borrow a smal amount from Capital One and pay it back. They you will have some good credit.

Going bankrupt is a different process from just not paying credit cards. Even though you eventually paid off the cards; the credit report still has all the late payments and credit actions against you to collect the debt.

CCJs (County Court Judgements) stay on your credit history for ever. If you have satisfied them, then it will show on your credit history as 'satisfied'. The general rule in the UK is that after 6years your credit rating should start to improve gradually (same rules apply for bankruptcies and IVAs)

There are various companies you will issue credit to pretty much anyone nowadays, but with obvious high interest rates. This is obviously the risk they take.

I advise you not to go down this route f taking high interest credit, but to wait a while, making sure you keep up all you other payments so that there aren't any other red herrings on your credit history.

Regards

If you do not want to file bk the best way to clean up your credit is to do what you have done and is pay the credit cards, but then you need to contact the companies and get them to contact TRW, Experian, and Equifax and have them remove the unpaid cards this my take a while but they will usually complie.

take the loan from capital one and pay it back pretty fast. repeat this a few times maybe and dont apply for any credit cards for at least 6 months, when you do apply look for one with a higher apr as you will be more likely to get accepted and don't apply for loads at once as you will get refused on all of them.

Pay them off. Then go to the county court it will cost a couple of quid for a statement saying paid in full.
