Spiritually it was intended to be that you were obliged to give that child or children the religious education that the parents couldn't should they die. In today's society, it has come to mean something different, such as taking care of a child or children PERIOD, should something happen to the parents. It has the connotation of being there for that child, of remaining in that childs life, etc... possibly helping out financially or physically if needed.

Nowadays it's more of an honor then a duty. Back in the day God parents where supposed make sure the child was raised in the christian faith if something happened to the parents.

I would think the same as the responsibilities of a human parent -
to raise and teach the offspring the proper and best way of living life, and to pass on the consequences of negative behavior.

If, for some unforseen circumstance should prevent the biological parents to continue 'raising' their child, the 'godparent' would assume the responsibilty of 'raising' that child in the same manner and according to same the beliefs of the parents.

The god parent pays for the kid's college and any need the kid has. That way the parents can spend their money on cruises.

in case something bad happens to rear the child the same way as the parent would in the laws rules and mores of the Society.

From what I remember. It is supposed to be to make sure the child goes to church or something like that. But most I know don't do that (including myself) but just kind of treat the kid extra special. But, I do think it's the whole "I will be responsible for his/her religious teaching" thing.
