There is a job opening at the business where my good friend's mother works - it is a small law firm. I am thinking about applying but I do not know if my friend will be upset. Because of the type of person she is, if I mention it to her she will most likely say that she wants the job & I'll feel obligated to let her go ahead and have it. What is the proper thing to do in this situation?

Your number one, and that should always come first! Friendships can take a turn in either direction at any given time. Job opportunties aren't easily available and when opportunity knocks, open the door!

Apply for the position and don't say anything about it to your friend. If her mother works at the firm and hasn't said anything to her daughter, maybe she doesn't want her working there or maybe they have an anti-nepotism policy. If you get the job, buy her a drink to celebrate the occasion.

Don't feel bad about it. If her mom wanted her to have the job she would have said something to her. Go ahead and apply. You're not being a *****, the corporate world is cutthroat. No hard feelings.

I'd think that if your friend's mother wanted your friend to work there that she already knows about the job. If she'd get upset because you're trying to better yourself, do you really think she's your friend?????

I hope that helps with your decision - I say GO FOR IT!

Apply for the job. If you get accepted then talk to your friend. Tell her why you need the job and ask her to understand. If she is a reall friend she will think about what's best for you. If she is unreasonable, then there is nothing you can do. So you just take the job. She will get mad for a while and then get over it.

I'm sure if her mom works there she already knows about the opening. Besides some companies have rules about hiring relatives.

Just because she might want it is no reason for you not to apply or to step aside for her. You may be the better applicant for the position.

Apply for the job, you need to look out for yourself! If your friend wants the job and applies for it then that’s fine. But don’t just “give” her the job. If she’s a real friend then who gets the job won’t matter!

Your friend does not work there and it's none of her business if you apply. If you tell her and she gets upset..what kind of friend is she/??

Ask her if she would mind if you applied for the job opening. Also ask her mother.
