No, there is no problem with your sister and her daughter owning and playing with a cat.
Most cat illnesses are not transferable to humans, anyway, and since this is not an outdoor cat, there shouldn't be any problem. However, they should be supervised when playing together, as with any animal and child.
The only risk to women, is when cleaning a litter box while pregnant (playing with a cat, though, poses no health risk, even when pregnant).
Cat faeces can carry a parasite that causes toxoplasmosis, an infection that isn't serious for you but can pose a danger to a developing baby.

There is no health danger for women to be around cats.
However, it is suggessted that traditional cat litter is dangerous for pregnant women. Not having it in the house, but actually scooping it and breathing the dust. There are lots of products on the market now that are dust free or made of a different, less harmful substance, such as crystals or recycled news paper.

You didn't mention if the cat was a stray or not? But with all animals it is wise to take them to the vet and get all needed shots. The rabies shot is very important. Call your local vet to ask questions. Two health concerns come to mind with a cat: 1.) cat scratch fever or Bartonella henselae Infection). My daughter is 10 years old and the local vet and myself have told her to be gentle with our cats. Only 40% of the cat population carry this disease,. And my daughter does play rough sometimes, and she has never been diagnosed with this. The 10 year old should learn how to handle cats. How to care and love them.
The only other danger that comes to mind is for pregnant women. It is wise to not let a pregnant woman clean a cats litter due to 2.) toxoplasmosis. A single-celled parasite called Toxoplasma gondii causes a disease known as toxoplasmosis. A Toxoplasma infection occurs by: Accidentally swallowing cat feces from a Toxoplasma-infected cat that is shedding the organism in its feces. This might happen if you were to accidentally touch your hands to your mouth after gardening, cleaning a cat's litter box, or touching anything that has come into contact with cat feces. So dr's recommend not to come in contact with the cat litter. And the golden rule as with any animal is to wash your hands after contact. There are excellent website to obtain more information on pet care. The CDC health pets and healthy people website is very informative as well as the purina.com/cats website.

Nope, unless you're allergic there are no real dangers with being around cats (apart from the litterbox issues mentioned above). In fact, you should consider your niece lucky to be able to have a pet. I wanted one my whole life (and when that failed, I wanted a snake, which my mum said no to), but since I was allergic it never worked. Now I do have a cat, and it's working just fine (apparantly I'm not allergic to Cornish Rexes ^_^).

I'm a woman, and I take care of our three cats. And I don't experience any health problems either. It's great that the girl enjoys playing with the cat, and the cat apparently is having fun too!

A healthy cat who has no exposure to the outside world is absolutely no danger to a human adult or child.
Your niece can only benefit in learning to love and respect animals and the cat will give her a lot of love, spending time with her, when busy parents today don't always have to give their children.
