I would choose the Salvation Army. They do such good work and look at what they did during Hurricane Katrina. I donate to the Salvation Army Angel Tree program through Sears. You can pick a certain person and they have their size clothing, what toy they might like, etc. I have seen TV commercials about St. Jude's Foundation as well. That is a wonderful place to donate money.
YOU ARE SO VERY KIND.
You could also choose something like The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Juvenile Arthritis Foundation, Lupus Foundation. Anything that will help someone else.

God Bless You.

Instead of donating money to a charity, I would recommend setting up a scholarship fund.

One student with altruistic goals and an education from a good university could potentially help more people than a charity that specializes in transient needs.

When faced with a daunting 80k for a bachelor’s degree, students must choose between burdening their families and championing a social cause or the most basic of financially solvency.

Prevent your generous donation from becoming band-aid over a broken sore of starvation, homelessness, and sickness. Instead, invest your money in the solutions of food production in the third world, or sustainable architecture that would provide shelter with minimal environmental impact, through the education of altruistic individuals.

I would first drive through your closest city or read the local paper. What does your community need? It is great to donate to your local Red Cross, or any other charity. But think as to what you would like to improve in your town. And give to that. When you donate a large amount sometimes it is nice to see a few fruits of your gift, no matter how small. And if we all helped the people in our community we would all be much better off

Does it have to be one charity? Because my first choice would be for the St Jude , second for the family's left behind. by those lost in the war. How about sending gifts to those fighting the war in Iraq? Then Of course there is Salvation Army and Toys for tots. and the Angel foundation. But what ever charity you choose please make sure they are who they say they are,and that the money is going to what you want it to go too. And what percentage of it is. and that goes for everyone. Just cause they say they are a foundation does not make them so. a lot of times we are paying for their light bills, phone bills, adds. and only one percent is going to the needy.

I would get 200 $5000 cashiers check and visit my local military base and find the young couple with kids trying desperately to make ends meet and serve our country. I would then ask around the police department as to who is really struggling to make ends meet with the low pay officers demand. Then I would visit the local grocery store and buy $5000 worth of canned goods and personally deliver them to the local food shelter. Then it would be off to the thrift stores and I would buy up every blanket I could find and deliver them to the local homeless shelter. Then I would re-evaluate where I am. I would NEVER turn the money over to a charity. I want to personally account for the money to ensure it is used as intended.

There is a world crisis foundation that is headquartered in Baltimore, Maryland. The purposse of the foundation is to provide emergency relief to disaster victims all over the world. From my understanding, the foundation is funded solely by donation. They were instrumental in sending assistance after the Tsunami that hit Asia several years ago, and after the Hurricanes that hit New Orleans and the southern gulf coast towns of the US.

Donate to Kensington Church located in Michigan. www.kensingtonchurch.org

Kensington provides for several different charities in and out of Michigan. One of the most costly is the Mission Trips to Third World countries. These trips are funded by the participants who go and help to build churches and schools for the communities.

Or of course, you could donate to my meager bank account. Its called the Single Working Going to School for MBA, Mother of a 16 Year Old who thinks I am an ATM.

I agree 100% with sg1234. Heifer International is dedicated to eradicating hunger from the source- not just supplying short-term aid. Both are important, but it is more difficult to find organizations truly dedicated to long-term solutions (social, environmental, economic) the same way that Heifer is. Their goal is long-term sustainablilty and empowering people to help themselves and others. Check out their web site.

Other groups that are taking front-line approaches to solutions:

Gates Foundation
Habitat for Humanity
Doctors Without Borders

In the US. 4-H programs and agricultural universities are tackling leadership issues and the future of food and water supplies. And, medical research is saving millions of lives each year.

If you want to focus more on a specific area, write to me: I have connections with several small but excellent health, water, reforestation, and animal welfare groups throughout Central America and Peru.
