I want a fairy tale place to live....a house that looks amazing with Christmas lights, and a neighborhood that everyone gets along and can come over for holiday parties. I want a low crime rate, and not a big city. What do you all recommend?

* For new ideas, I would watch the HGTV channel where they compare or hunt for houses around the country. Then look online for local real estate listings and find a realtor to help you research. The website for Houston is http://www.har.com

* My friend William boasts about Portland Oregon. If you don't mind public transportation, the city is built user friendly for pedestrian traffic.

* For neighborhoods that have worked toward family-friendly renewal, look online for "Congress for New Urbanism" or related sites. The cities that have won recognition may be worth looking into. I believe downtown Providence in Rhode Island was recognized for being the largest historic district of its kind.

* Where I live in Houston, there is the advantage of having access to a large city, with diverse resources, but with localized surburban areas where residents can enjoy the closeness of their own neighborhood community. My boyfriend's family lives in a small subdivision in Humble, Texas, where the local association owns its own private park and they plan neighborhood activities together for the families and kids. So it is possible to have the best of both. (He has a house for sale nearby if you want to contact him. Look for http://www.blayneyandassociates.com and ask for Bill.)

* Austin and Dallas and neighboring cities are still very popular for their land value for a reasonable investment. Again, you can live near a major metropolitan area, but in a smaller community where everyone knows each other.

Unfortunately in Austin, as in Houston, corporate developers have started capitalizing more on potential profits, putting more pressuring local businesses and property owners to sell out.

Because this trend toward urbanization happens everywhere, there are growing efforts across the country among neighborhoods residents to organize and support sustainable plans, including green space and parks, thus the "urban renewal" and "neighborhood preservation" movements.

It is a nice dream but you would have to move to a small town, in idaho, oregon or ohio but even in these small areas there will be some kind of crime. If you find that place let me know. That is sounds like a nice place to raise a family.
