I had my gallbladder taken out two years ago. Very simple procedure, it is a day surgery in fact. They make three little incisions, one where a scope goes in, one where the tool that they use to put gas in your abdomen to get the other organs out of the way goes in and a final one just between the ribs, but about an inch down to suck the gallbladder out after they have clipped it away from everything.
The worst part about the whole surgery is that the gas they use gets stuck in your belly for about a day or so, and it has to "just work it's way out" but all will be okay. It only takes about a week to recover from it, and other than the gassy feeling in your tummy you will only feel slight soreness where the incisions were made, they are very tiny incisions, about 3/4" is all.
As far as gaining weight - I think that is really all up to the individual - I didn't.

No weight gain, no real complications. My father had it done a few years before I did, he had no real problems either.
They pump your abdomen full of air during the operation to help give them some working room, and that may cause some feelings of bloating/discomfort in the following day or two. My problem was that the initial pain killer my doc prescribed had bloating as a possible side effect. Boy, it really did; I felt like a balloon. I got the prescription changed and then felt better. I was back at work in something like three or four days.
You should really discuss with your surgeon any concerns you have. An informed and in control patient is usually a better patient.

There is definitely no weight gain, you may actually lose a bit because you can't eat quite the same after the surgery for the next 6 months or so - for me, anything remotely greasy would send me to the bathroom with diarrhea, even eating just 2 french fries, pretty much any fastfood or anything cheesy. It does go away though.
There is pain, but that ends too. You will make it just like the rest of us have. Cheer up.

My grandmother had hers removed last year and she was so relieved. The pain was so bad before she had it removed. She did not have any complications and she actually lost 10 pounds.
