at the side of the nail, seems to e bit swollen and really hurts if you press it. the skin looks a little white at places, instead of pink, and occasionally i can feel my heart beat in it!

am i dying?

dont press it, use germaline and cover it up, leave for approx 2-3 days then take off and the pain should disappear.

How swollen is the area?
If you press over the swollen area with a finger, does it leave a dent after you take the finger away?
Aggravating factors
What makes the swelling worse?
Is it any worse in the morning or at night?
Does exercise make it worse?
Relieving factors
What make the swelling better?

Is it better if you use an elastic wrap?
What home treatment have you tried? How effective was it?
Other
What other symptoms are also present?
Is there joint pain?
Is there fever?
Is there a rash?
The physical examination will include a detailed examination of the affected joint(s).

Diagnostic tests that may be performed include the following:

Blood studies (such as a CBC or blood differential)
Joint X-rays

It sounds like you have an infection in the finger or nail, don't worry, go to the doctors and they can help, or even the chemist could offer some advice.

Usually you just bathe the area a couple of times a day in a disinfectant.

Maybe.
No you are not dieing....why would that be your first thought??
Sounds to me like maybe you have a hangnail or something and that it is probably getting infected.
You can feel your heartbeat in it because of the infection probably.
Don't panic, put some neosporin on it and see if that helps with the infection, and see if you can dig the hangnail out (if that's the problem)

NO! It's infected. You need to go to the doctor and get antibiotics, it should go down in a week.
Put your finger in some bleach or a cup of rubbing alcohol for a minute. That will stave off the forming infection for sure.

sounds like a hang nail, nothing serious. Try soaking it in some warm water with a little salt.

You have a hang nail that has become infected. Just give it time, it'll fix itself.
