Ego is our self perception against the world. And so to protect our image, we tend to commit all evil!

Ego is what got Lucifer kicked out of heaven. It may not be the cause for ALL evils but it sure is the cause of most. It goes hand-in-hand with greed and selfishness. These two vices are our worst enemies. It's just unfortunate that most people today don't realize that. "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble." (James 4:6)

I think we all cause ourselves more pain that what God relieves us from. We just make each situation worse and worse because we put our pride on the side, and take advantage of our self ego.

pride is often the root of all other sin. i think the bible mentions the danger of pride more than anything.
i have seen this first hand experience as well.
