Jesus was no longer in the manger but in a house. -- Matthew 2:11

Herod ordered the deaths of all those under the age of two years. -- Matthew 2:16

Therefore Jesus was older than newborn but younger than two years of age.

"Then Herod, when he saw that he was deceived by the wise men, was exceedingly angry; and he sent forth and put to death all the male children who were in Bethlehem and in all its districts, from two years old and under, according to the time he had determined from the wise men" -Matt2:16. It is clear from this verse that Jesus was about 2 years old at the time of the visit from the wise men. He added those younger than 2 because he wanted to make triple sure that the "King of the Jews" was indeed killed and wouldn't escape and because of his evil pride. One more thing; Nazareth was not then and is not now a district of Bethlehem. Herod knew from the Biblical prophecies that the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem and that the wise men had been following the star up until their arrival at his palace. Therefore, in case the Child was already escaping with His parents, the "Death of the Innocents" was in Bethlehem and its districts. There had not been sufficient time for an escape to be made as far as Nazareth from Bethlehem. I have visited Israel and the 2 places are quite a distance apart. In those days they didn't have vehicles and couldn't travel fast. It had only been a few hours at most since the wise men had seen the star, visited Herod and left. The rugged terrain in this area would also have slowed down Joseph, Mary and the Baby Jesus. Plus, no parent in their right mind in those days would've travelled long distances with a young baby in their care because it was far too dangerous and far too arduous of a journey.

Old Wise Men

braennvin2 has the most correct answer. Jesus was certainly not in the manger at the time of the visit by the wise men. Herod ordered the deaths of baby boys two years old and younger, which would indicate the timeline.

It is a common misconception that the wise men came and visited Jesus shortly after His birth. In fact, the wise men came months (or possibly as much as two years) later, when Joseph and Mary had already settled in Nazareth. That is why Matthew 2:11 says the wise men visited and worshipped Jesus in a house. Jesus was born in Bethlehem, and the wise men likely witnessed the "Star of Bethlehem" at the time Jesus was born. The wise men did not arrive in Israel for a significant amount of time after Jesus was born. During that time, Joseph and Mary had returned to live in Nazareth (Matthew 2:13-20). That is also why Herod ordered all the boys in Bethlehem under two years of age to be killed (Matthew 2:16). Herod did not know that Jesus was no longer in Bethlehem, and did not know that the star had reappeared to the wise men and redirected them to Nazareth.

Herod estimated the birth of Jesus to have been two years from the time the Magi visited him.so Jesus couldn't have been two years. Jesus must have been a few days old when the Magi visited Him.

This question is hotly debated by biblical scholars. Some say he was only a few days old. Others contend he had to have been several months old because of the time it would have taken to travel from their home countries into Palestine. Therefore many scholars place Jesus in Nazereth not Bethleham.
