They could be a friend, maybe that is the only time they have to talk to you, or maybe something important happened in their life at that time, and became mad because they thought you did not pay attention to what they had to share, you only paid attention to the time.

Well, if you tell a friend what hours are best for them to call you and 6am is not one of them, he/she should understand. If they get mad, they can still be your friend, but you can reason with them so that they understand this is not good for you.
My friends know that I will not accept calls after 10pm and adhere to that because it is my time frame for social talk on the phone. I abide by their rules, as well. This is just mutual respect; something friends have for one another. :)
Simply explain to your friend and if they have boundaries for calls, compare the two. He/she will understand. Sometimes friends just want to know you are there for them 24/7, which you can be but there is nothing wrong with having restrictions on times to call. A real friend will understand.

I am assuming they got MAD not made.
Not really sure if I would move them into the non-friend category- it depends on the conversation and the reasons for the early morning calls.

I wouldn't go as far as to say they are not a friend...maybe they for some reason think that's a reasonable time. Were they really mad and don't want to talk to you or just like "what the heck?" mad?
