My Muslim friends have always told me that prophet Muhammed was very peacful. However, I found a story in his biography that tells that prophet Muhammed tortured a jewish man (with the name of Kenana Ibn Al Rabie) to tell the muslims about a treasure he had hidden when Muslims invaded his tribe. The story continues until it tells that when Kenana refused to tell prophet Muhammed about that treasure, he was finally KILLED (after being tortured).

Is that story true?

This is an absolute lie. Islam derives from the root "salam" which means peace.
Do you think Mohammad would teach us to believe in Judaism, their holy book and then kill them for a treasure?
He would tell us that they are the people of the book (people with the holy book are the Jews and the Christians) and then kill them?!
He tells us these verses from Koran then kill a believer? (Surah 4: verses 92-93) Surah the Women verses 92,93 say that we are NOT to kill a believer on purpose and sets the punishment for those who kill a believer BY ACCIDENT (freeing a soul, giving money to the deceased man, or if you didn't have the money enough to do these things you are to fast 2 months in a row from dawn till sunset) this is not a simple punishment for killing someone BY MISTAKE and that if someone kills a believer on purpose is going to be punished by eternal hell in the afterlife and is to be executed in this life. The verses didn't say Muslims they said believers.
What the messenger used to do when he was alive is an example to be followed until now, Islamic traditions, (sunnah), how many Muslims did you hear of who killed people over hidden treasures? 1/5th of the population of earth are Muslims do you know how earth would be like if we really were ordered to kill people for treasures. That story doesn't make any sense.

You said that you found this in Mohammed's (pbuh) biography. Do you mind sharing the publisher with me? Add more details, I really want to help you out, because this is the first time i've heard of such thing and I don't believe it.

And I've googled the name of Kenana Ibn Al Rabie - nothing came up.

So either add some real source, or else you're not getting any serious response

EDIT: BINGO! I found Kenana's name mentioned! And he never even had a chance to meet Resulullah (pbuh)! Here's the story where his name is mentioned, if you're willing to read:

10 - Safiya Bent Hayy Ibn Akhtab:

Her father was the chief of Bani Al Nodeir. She was a jewess, married twice to two Jews, Sallam Ibn Mashkam and Kenana Ibn Al Rabie' Ibn Abul Hakik. She was among the captives during the battle of Khaiber in the year seven , and when Dohayya Al kalby asked Allah's prophet for a woman of the captives , he offered him one; Safiyya.

When the companions of the Prophet know about this, they came to him and said: " O Allah's Messenger, Safiyya is the daughter of the chief of Bani Qorayza and Bani Al Nodeir, and you are the only one fit for her.”

The prophet told Dohayya to take another captive, and asked her to choose between going back to her fold or to be set free and marry him. She preferred to marry him.

When Safiyya was wife of kenana she had a dream in which she saw the moon fall down into her lap. She told her husband about the dream and he sarcastically commented! " the only interpretation of this dream is that you wish to marry the king of Hidjaz; Muhammad. So saying he slapped her on the face so strongly that her eyes were swollen.

When she was summoned to the prophet he noticed her swollen eyes, he asked her about them. The prophet was not to blame for protecting a captive, the daughter of a chief, had she been destined to someone else, she would have remained the rest of her life tormented by a feeling of bitterness, shame and degradation. One day the prophet entered her room and saw her crying, when he asked her the reason she answered: " I have been told that Aisha and Hafsa are speaking badly of me. They say that they are better that Safiyya because they are cousins and wives of Allah's Messenger". The prophet then said: " how about saying to them" : " How come when my father is Haron , my uncle is Moses and my husband is Muhammad?"

On the other hand, there is no harm in the prophet marrying a captive, after giving her the choice of freedom and returning to her folk, or marrying him.

Safiyya was renowned for her wisdom, intelligence and kindness.

EDIT: How about some English source? You're still not convincing me! Thanks for all the thumbs down you gave us, we were trying to give you an honest answer.

Have a nice day Sir!

The only reference to it that I can find is to an answer here on yahoo to a muslim question by a rather prejudiced source so that I am suspicious of its truth. If it was true it would appear in some history some where. Such a story should surface somewhere besides one yahoo answer..

I just looked up the source.

Its from Critisim of Muhammad (pbuh)

Most Muslims probably didn't hear this story, because it was recorded by the people who were tortured, not the ones doing the torture.

Any half-way objective history of Islam will readily acknowledge that Muhammad himself led raids on many villages and towns (some of which were Christian or Jewish) and slaughtered or forcefully converted the inhabitants. He helped to plan dozens more for other Muslims before he died.

Well.... If you blame Jesus for America going to war in Iraq, then yes, you can blame Muhammed for torturing all the people that Saddam tortured. Generalizations are great aren't they??

Muhammed usually didn't torture people. He killed them or had them killed. One man begged for his life because of his children, but Muhammed killed him anyway. Your friends are mis-leading you.
