Mainly because people are looking for a way to not be responsible for their own actions. They don't want to ponder if it is okay to steal to feed your family, they want a higher power to tell them.
I'm more concerned why people think others have no morals because they DON'T belong to a religious group.

Morals have always been part of society. Primitive bushmen had them.
Christians try and hijack them but Christianity is only something like four to six thousand years old. Are they seriously suggesting there were no morals before then? And would it not be truly immoral for Christians to suggest that non believers were not moral? or that they were following Christian morals?
Morals come about to safeguard the society. Without them societies would have floundered and probably died out. Simple morals such as not killing or fighting your own tribe members, partnership or marriage rights and that sort of thing would have been the start.
Atheists, pagans and all sorts are policemen, politicians, teachers, doctors, nurses and many other professionals where morals play a huge part. It could be argued that they are probably fairer in their dealings with society because they do not follow a religious moral code but that which society and good honest people see as correct.

I don't believe religion makes a person have more morales than someone who is not religious. Morals come from a sense of right and wrong. Reglion is a belief in a higher power. Almost all religions teach the same theory of right and wrong. Belonging to a religion doesn't make a person more moral either. There are many that hide behind religion have no morals, I call them hypocrits.

If the only reason you don't slap another is because of the threat of being slapped back, you have no morals.
If you don't slap another because you know it is wrong, you have morals.
Having morals is doing the right thing even when nobody is watching.
It is possible to have that without Religion, but I find life much easier being Catholic.
Peace and God Bless!

That depends on what faith you are and how devout you are. You are right about the most basic of morals, love one another as yourself. That is one of the two great commandments, which are supplements to the original ten. Judaism doesn't recognize them because they were imparted by Christ... Whether we all realize it or deny it or believe it or whatever the case, we are all God's children and belong to the universal Catholic church. It encompasses everything and was founded by Christ, the Son of God. He walked this Earth as an example and sacrificed himself so that we might live eternal life. And, like I said, that is the most basic belief but there is much more. We need to accept eachother and love eachother. I think if we start from there, regardless of whatever faith or label we give ourselves, we can move ahead.

I have morals, I do not belong to any organized religious groups.
what the dif between a moral man and an ethical man?
A moral man wont cheat on his wife.
thats the def of morals to me... you described a cuase and effect, slapping and getting slapped back. a moral man would not have slapped in the 1st place knowing it was worng and there would be reprocutions.

No not at all. Morals are kind of like manners, you are taught right from wrong and you decide where to go with it. If you belong to a church group, you are held accountable for your morals, that's all.

I think that those who are in religious groups are taught that if one is not part of religious group then they don't have morals...as ridiculous as it sounds i feel that is the way i was taught..i disagree with it now but i used to not be friends with people who were not of may same religious group because i was taught they would lead me to do "bad" things which is ridiculous. People are people no matter what religious group they belong to.

It's not necessary. But the standards are likely to be higher if you are a more religious person.
Case in point a religious person would class overcharging as cheating a person where as a non religious person might say it was cavaet emptor.

I think you are half right. Most people seem to think you must belong to THEIR religious group to have the same morals as them.
