This is probably easier said than done for most people. If you are stressed, depressed or lacking emotional support from friends, family or loved ones you may resort to emotional eating.
This is a terrible eating habit because it causes you to eat between meals and when you're not hungry. Sometimes you may think you are a hungry but in reality you may just be lonely and are using food to comfort you and fill a void.
Stress and depression also causes an increase production of the hormone cortisol and can also add more tummy fat.
If this is a problem for you, it's important to seek help from either a professional, church members, friends or family.
One thing is for sure...stress and flat stomachs are like oil and water. They just don't mix.
Depression-related eating habits often manifest as a tendency to overeat. Individuals who are suffering from depression are more inclined to eat food in order to feel better, and unfortunately, the food choices are usually high-calorie comfort foods such as ice cream, chocolate cake, and macaroni and cheese. The temporary relief and comfort a depressed person feels from eating certain foods is what contributes to the tendency to overeat. When the relief the food offered has subsided, the depressed individual goes back to eat some more.
While depression itself causes depression-related eating habits, medications used to treat the condition also cause changes in eating behavior. Some medications have the undesirable side effect of increased appetite while others create a decrease in appetite. If you’re worried about how a prescription medication might affect a person’s eating habits, it is important to discuss the issue with psychiatrist.

It could swing either way. Some people eat tons, some barely eat when depressed. Same thing with being happy. If you're ecstatic about something you might celebrate a lot, or you're so hyped up that you forget to eat. So it really depends on the person.

More likely, yes. But not to all. Eating can be an outlet to most depressed person but to some, they can't even eat when they're depressed. Sometimes, food tastes like rubber when a person feels so down.

It all depends on each person. Some people find a chocolate gateau as an escape, and others find a needle full of heroin a way of escape.
The point is that non of these are healthy, and the only way to stop is to face up to the fact that you have a problem, and find a new way of dealing with it so that you can face up to life without a crutch.

Depends on the individual
Some do in fact eat more when depressed, but others don't eat at all or very little.

It depends on the person. When I am feeling depressed or anxious, I tend not to eat at all.

I think that depends on the individual. Some depressed people actually lose their appetites. Both can be a sign of depression.

It depends on what the depressed person involuntarily does or feels like doing. I play racing games on PS2 when I feel down (with volume on highest setting)
