At issue is employing the peoples of Mexico, and giving them wages and so forth. That does generally seem to be the goal, here. Sooooo....why not start more agriculture in Mexico, and turn Mexico into a global food exporter? Non-arable land can be turned into farmland with some work, I know there's a lot of workers in Mexico 'cause that's all we seem to hear about anymore. So,
get people working building more farms there. Soil improvements, irrigation projects, processing places, all these things are good, it's been proven in america, so why not do more of it in Mexico?
I'm in favor of a strong, self-supporting Mexico, because I think it'll only benefit america. What I don't like is seeing a lot of people harping on why they should be permitted to break our border laws.
With all this industry potential, why hasn't it 'kicked' wide open in Mexico, yet? C'mon, now...

That is a really good plan. If they can turn the sand of Nevada into Las Vegas, they should be able to turn real soil into an economy!

Unfortunately illegal immigrants are, and have been for decades, an integral part of the US economy. Nobody wants to talk about that very much. Thousands of farms rely on the cheap labor with no benefits. Without the cheap labor those farmers could not afford to compete with the big farms that are swallowing them all up.

The big conglomerate farms hire the illegals because it saves them millions in social security, workman's comp, and all the other benefits they would have to pay. If the big farms get caught with illegals, they just pay the fines. They still come out millions ahead.

The US needs to keep us in fear of illegal immigrants so that we will keep it illegal perpetually. If people were allowed in on work visas, they would need to be treated like the humans they are and be allowed to participate in society. That would cost rich people money. Fear is the weapon of choice to keep immigration illegal.

These powerful food conglomerates will do whatever they can to prevent Mexico from becoming economically viable. If the day happens that people are not motivated to sneak into the US, then they lose their cheap labor. And WORSE..would be if Mexico started producing food that competed with our food. Imagine if Mexico started exporting food to other countries (like we do). They would be able to produce and distribute food much cheaper than the US could. We would lose all our over-seas business. People in the US might even start buying food from Mexico. We might have to share our prosperity with poor people! The US will never let that happen.

Your suggestion is 100% correct. We all need to keep our eye on that goal of fair trade. Remember, FREE trade does not equal FAIR trade.

many would love to but economy forbids it. the price for fertilizer and seeds for planting costs more than the price for food. and even if they do harvest let's say rice they will get paid less than a dollar per bulk because in china the farmers there exported out cheaper. and even selling it amongst just the country of mexico the farmers will be paid less for their crop because so many people are willing to sell it cheaper or because too many people planted the same kind of crop that season and drove down the prices of that certain crop. and let's not exclude the bad weather, pests and plauges that sometimes affect the crops wiping them out in one blow and leaving the farmer without a crop and indebted up to 2 thousands dollars wich they cannot afford to pay back right away. and unlike in the U.S the farmers of mexico have nobody to fall back on in case their crops fail,if they loose on their crops its their loss and their problems. and yeah i know this is true because my family are all farmers and grow crops back in mexico and because i have seen it firsthand how much the rich people there abuse the farmers. so any other bright ideas? who knows if maybe people would quit exporting out crops and just buy from their local countrys' farmers it would be better but not many would do that when they can get it brought in at a cheaper price and save a few bucks.

Why would Mexico want to support itself when the US will support it?

one problem Mexicans don't know how to irrigate thier land, they don't have many people with agricultural engineering degrees

we would have to do it for them, and even if we did, they would take credit for all the positive and blame us on the negative
