If for instance the two thugs who murdered the London lawyer were subjected to public slow-hanging and disembowelled, in say, trafalgar square, or were blinded and crippled and then set free, would their contemporaries be deterred or would such thugs just enhance their 'street-cred'? How much does cutting off the hands of thieves in Moslem countries deter others? Can Islam teach us something here?

No I Don't think we need any lessons from Islam - What We need is a Government that has a realistic attitude to the Problem , by carrying out the Execution of these Murdering thugs that are Destroying the lives of so many people - not only the unfortunate Victims but their Families and Loved Ones whose lives are also destroyed - These Murdering Thugs do not deserve to be allowed to live on this Earth - at Present the Victims and their Tragic Losses count for Nothing --- Time for a CHANGE

I don't think we Westerners would wish to adopt the barbarism of certain Middle East countries, but there is another path that might work - and we used to have this as an option a few decades ago. Prisoners who committed heinous crimes were sentence to "X years hard labour" which mean they were sent to somewhere like Dartmoor Prison where every day, for the duration of their sentence, and in all weather conditions, they were forced to break rocks with sledgehammers for use in road construction. And those who were rebelled were given so many days solitary confinement with only bread and water to eat. Now, although not as severe as the punishments you suggested, I am absolutely positive that if the yob element in society knew they risked spending up to 25 years doing such work they'd think twice before going out deliberately to rob and injure/murder innocent members of the public.

Yes....let's cut their balls off instead though.

The sad thing is the two idiots who murdered the lawyer a) have no conception about what they have done and b) will probably be out soon anyway.

In the past I have defended the British Government's stance on not using capital punishment. However we now live in a society that is so broken down that people will murder at random in the street for fun. "Happy slapping" was bad enough, this is now sinister. Pedophiles can walk the streets with nothing more than a piece of plastic on their ankle. Kids are leaving school not being able to read and write, a mass murderer (Rose West) is being served haute cuisine AND the money to pay for it is coming out of OUR pockets. The government wants to hand out free heroin and if we fight back.....we violate the perpetrators "Human rights".

F**k the human rights act, cut their balls off in Trafalgar square, I'm sure Lord Nelson would love to watch. Im sick and tired of watching these pieces of crap harrass, assault racially abuse and murder decent, hard working people and then cry victim themselves when they are caught because they have a heroin addiction.

So to answer your question, yes Islam can teach us something here.

Criminals generally plan on getting away with crimes.

Maybe disemboweling tailgaters would make people consider driving more politely, but it's not appropriate.

Lowering ourselves to the level of animals isn't the answer.

A proper sentence for a crime should balance the following considerations -

1) Justice

2) Deterrence

3) Punishment

4) Rehabilitation

Going medieval doesn't accomplish too much in those regards.

Severe punishments only have any effect if the criminal believes that he will be caught.

Most of these thugs commit their crimes without any consideration of the consequence for themselves or their victims. So no matter how bizarre the punishment you think up, it won't deter someone who either doesn't believe they will be caught, or doesn't link their actions and the consequences thereof.

If you just want to punish, that's a completely different question, but it won't deter.

Well, I think that you would have to be pretty damn sure that you have the right person before killing or torturing someone ~ there has been alot of instances where someone was actually proven innocent of a crime that they were sentenced to prison for. Also, I think that torturing someone makes you just as bad as the killer. Just throw them in prison for life ~ but, with no priveleges such as TV, radio, letters, etc......

Punishments to fit the crime is what will stop them. Personally I dont agree with the death sentence for murder because its too quick - the murderer doesnt suffer enough or have time to reflect - also there can be too many errors of killing the innocent man/woman. What I think is sentence them to a life of hard labour - like the old chain gangs - how long will they have street cred for then - their mates wont want to know and for every day they're working in back breaking conditions it'll be a long day where they can think about what they did to get there !!!!!!!!

Nothing! Many if not most such people do not believe they will get caught, are caught up in the moment and thus to not think of cause and effects, and some, some scary few, become so excited by the act that they seek out more such barbaric actions to perform.

Death penalty is the ONLY correct punishment for murderers (murders that are committed out of anything but heat of the moment passion ie. catching your spouse in bed with somebody else).

Accidents are not murder, even though they do cause death.

Rehabilitation is not an option nor is it warranted.

slow deaths only serve for satisfying the vengeful spirit of the victim's family and friends, but they could also serve as a warning.

What would be BEST is that ALL executions were, once again, PUBLIC!

Not in any grotesque, voyeuristic reason, but for the same reason listed above-a warning to like minded criminals.

NO, Islam can teach us nothing!
