Hi there. I have short (mid-neck) thick straight hair and I want to curl it for a wedding without using tongs (can't afford at the mo) or loads of gel (makes it to hard and sticky). I actuallu want it more messy tousled than curly actually. How do I do this?!! My hairdresser suggested going to bed with wet hair and using hair spritz on it to structure it in the morning. any more ideas?

you could also section off your hair and curl them around straws while your hair is wet, sleep on it and the next morning you may have something that resembles curls

i would try sponge curlers. they are inexpensive. Put a little gel or molding cream and wear them overnight. I actually think the best way is to use a thick curling iron. Section off your hair, put a little hairspray and then wrap that section around the iron. Do this only for a few seconds so that the curl turns out very loose. You can even separate the curl. They should fall and create messy loose curls. Try it out before hand to see if it works! Good luck :)

YOU CAN DO IT URSELF!
If you dont want to use heat or too much gel- and you want the curls to look messy tousled and not too "rehearsed";
Wash your hair, towel-dry a little ,
put setting lotion and a some hair gel, part it into small vertical sections and make plaits. (like this http://www.africanbraids.biz/images/back_view_003.jpg or individual plaits),
dry under a dryer...
Gently loosen plaits and tousle with fingers. If you like the result, put a little spritz spray in for extra hold. beautfiul result.

If you want actual stiff curls, you can also use the straws. But use this same procedure.

All the best!

I've tried this on tons of my friends and it always comes out awesome: Wash your hair and while its still well, comb it into the style you'll want (such as parting it at the side). Then use MOUSSE (because its mostly air with a little hold). Put a pretty good amount into your hands and use your fingers to comb it through your hair. Then use your hands to scrunch it up all over. As you're scrunching, you should see the waves/tousles. When it dries, they'll still be there but more natural. I suggest you try it a couple of times prior to the wedding so you can see how much mousse you'll need/how much scrunching you'll actually need. Good luck!

Well start by sectioning you hair if you have short hair i suggest using a small iron. Make you sure you start at the base of your head, try not to burn yourself. As you curl you hair hold each curl with a clip. When you finish you should have a head full of clips take out the clips, run you fingers through you hair and then add spray. This will give a a nice tossed look. Hope I helped.

Hi im from Cape Town and well at the time my mom couldnt afford rollers or a curling tong for me either so she used to wet my hair comb it then piece by piece roll my hair into pieces of broken stockings that she used to cut up and sleep with it in like roll your hair in the stocking turn your hair up with the stocking wraped around your hair and sleep with it in for the night before you know it you should have curled hair in the morning and take it out..

Eg: Take a section of your hair then you wrap the stocking in your hair upwards like taking your hair and like you would with a curling tong wrap your hair aroudn the stocking and turn it up towards your skull and tie it tightly then in the morning should be dry and curled hope this helps. It defenitly does work

You could try Curuso Curlers, which are steam curlers, that work on dry hair, but last all day. I used them for my own wedding, and they lasted ALL day. You can find the machine, which you fill up 3/4 with water, then put the hot pink (or purple now, its been awhile), curler on till it's steamed, then roll your hair onto it, to your scalp. You do this all over your head, starting at you bangs, going backwards, pulling up from either side, to the crown of your head, and to the back. Do the sides the same way. Once they are dry (about 45 minutes, or you can blow dry the curlers, take them out, tousle them with your fingers, and spray at the roots. with your head at knee level (hair over your head. Flip it back, and you will have tousled locks. You can lift them up and spray them, but, that will only make them heavier. Spray lightly, and you are probably ready to go, unless you want to pull each side back to the crown and pin with a barrett. Good luck; it worked for me. The curls last all day. Good luck! :)

your hairdresser's idea sounds pretty good. but do a few trial runs first, you don't want you wake up on the day of the wedding with mad hair! Also i know someone who ties bits of her hair around small rags and sleeps with them in so it shapes the hair into curls, this always looks really nice. this takes quite a long time though, but it's worth it for a special occasion.

Two cheap options:

Pincurls - wet your hair using a mixture of water with a little gel, section it off into 1-2" pieces, coil it down to your scalp, and use bobbypins to secure it. sleep on it and make sure it is totally dry before you take out the pins.

Rag Curls - cut up a rag/old t-shirt/whatever into 1" wide, 6-12" long strips (depending on how long and thick your hair is), wet your hair with a mixture of water and a little gel, section it off into 1-2" pieces. starting at the tips of each piece, wrap it around one of the strips of cloth. keep wrapping until you get to your scalp, then tie the two ends together. sleep on it and make sure it is totally dry before you take out the rags.

If you have bobby pins, then take sections of your hair, twist them and curl them against your head (make sure it's twisted loosely or you'll look like you have dreadlocks) and pin them. Spray them, go to bed, let them out in the morning and shake it out. My sister used to do this a lot because it was the only thing that would curl her hair and leave it. Hope it helps!

If you want to curl your hair dont ever use Curl Iron. It is bad for your hair. Just wet your hair, apply some moose, scrunch it and dry it on low with diffuser on your hair.... It will look and natural and good ... and apply some hair spray if your prefer....
