I have a Vivitar Vivicam 8400 which is a fine Camera but I can say one thing for sure is that the Macro Mode is outstanding. I have a model railroad and took a few pictures with macro and was overwhelmed by the clarity and clearness of the pictures for how close I was.

The Canon cameras tend to have the best macro mode. In particular, the Canon SD-series camera (SD600, 800IS, 900, etc). Also, if you don't mind a larger camera and/or want something with a powerful zoom, the Canon S3iS has the best macro mode. It is the only camera that allows you to actually be ON TOP of the object when taking the picture.

That question is going to be difficult to answer. Some of the review sites talk about a camera's macro mode but I've never seen a comparison.
My 2 cents on the issue is that no matter what the camera, use a tripod. Macro is about sharpness and a tripod is esstential for that unless you are shooting really high shutter speeds.
