I'm a single mom looking for a job. Should I tell a prospective employer that I have children? I know from experience that employers do not hire moms even though that is illegal.
What do I tell the employer when they ask me why I can't work overtime or why I can't work certain hours like evenings and weekends? The real reason why I can't work those hours is because daycares are only open Monday- Friday until 6 pm and closed on the weekends and holidays.

That is a difficult situation.

It's usually better to not mention children, but as you say, some people will ask why you can't work certain hours. You could say "I have personal reasons" but they'd probably figure it out.

I'd say to focus on jobs that clearly stay within those hours you want to work. Receptionists (of all types ... things like animal shelters, nursing homes, contractors' offices, florists, all types of rental companies including limousines and U-Hauls, etc, check out anyplace that has someone to answer the phone!) are often needed. Sometimes they get benefits as well, which sounds like it would be helpful.

Why can't you work at a daycare yourself? Apply at a few. That might be a happy solution.

So, really, it might be better to avoid places that would ask you to work those hours anyway. Depending on where you live, it might be relatively easy to focus on these.

Don't give away more than you need to during the hiring process, but don't lie either. If you're the best person for the job, they should hire you no matter what, but I know what it's like out there. Good luck :)

It is best to be honest, but there are some questions that you don't have to answer completely, especially if you know that the result will be a bad one. See http://finduslaw.com/california_fair_employment_and_housing_act_feha_government_code_12900_12996 where the discuss how it is illegal to discriminate because of childbirth (in California).

But since you know that they do anyway, just realize that they cannot fire you after you have the job because you have kids.

Tell the truth. You don't have to volunteer the information, but don't lie...If you know you can do the job be confident and sell yourself...children aren't a liability...they are an asset and should be seen as such. If they don't want you because you have kids, then you don't want them or their stupid job!!

I would simply state that I am not available any other hours and if they push for a reason simply state that you have other committments. Most employers will not continue to push. It is okay to be evasive, but do not lie.
