High Renaissance Art/Italian Renaissance Art - You've got the Grand Masters, like Masaccio, Botticelli, Donatello, Ghiberti, Raphael, Michelangelo, and of course, Da Vinci (I know, total name dropping). The paintings are mostly religious, yet so hauntingly beautiful. Nobody seems to paint like these guys anymore.

the period covering post impressionism, expressionism and surrealism is my favourite but i like all art anyway. the paintings and drawings of this time line represent for me real art, art not for arts sake, art about the artist and how he sees the world not simply a painting of the world by the artist. i once read that monet thought gauguin was a 'jumped up dauber' [his own words] and whilst i think monet was a brilliant painter his paintings lack something and concidering the struggle he had to get his own paintings accepted shows a lack of understanding and ignorance about what art is and can be.

Italian Renaissance, 15th/16th Century (Before and after DaVinci & Michaelangelo)...
I read that more than 60% of all the world's great art was produced during that period...
