everything you do, or have done will cause an effect~
we reap what we sow, or the law of Karma.
it can manifest immediately, in this lifetime, or in future lifetimes.
it's not a punishment- it is what it is- like the physical law of action and reaction. but, there are things you can do to counter-balance having planted negative seeds. start planting positive seeds. do things that are helpful to others, service and volunteering. think positive thoughts. meditate. purify the mind, body and soul.
or- don't. you will eventually ascend to a higher state of consciousness, but it may take you many many lifetimes. noone is left behind- just some get "there" faster than others. Karma is the tool we use to help us evolve to higher states of being.
there is always an exception to the rule- if you don't keep the past alive in you- and you truly "live in the moment, in the NOW" than you are outside of karma. not such an easy thing to do!

No doubt about it. Everything that takes place from the day you are born right up until this minute works to shape your decisions, dreams, who you are, what you believe in, and where you are going or what you will be doing in the future. For example, if you are born into poverty you may continue to live in poverty or you may hate poverty so much that you will break out of that cycle of life and move into being middle class, rich, etc. Either way your past has shaped you to take the direction you did.
