I have a Maltese and a Yorkie. My Maltese is calmer than my Yorkie. Both are smart especially my Maltese but that is our fault b/c we spent more time teaching him. He is very protective of me. If my husband touches me he'll bark and growl at him but he will not bite. It's all for show. My Yorkie learned how to sit within an hour so I'm sure he could learn everything just a easy. They shed very little. All dogs shed to some degree, but some more than others. I find that all short hair breeds shed a good amount. Search on line for different breeds you may be interested in then search characteristics of each breed to see if they fit your lifestyle.
Go to dog.com.

I have a mini dachshund (weiner dog). He is small, about 12 lbs. His name is Oscar. He is very friendly and loves people and other dogs. He is slightly active. He does sleep half the day and he wants to play the other half. He likes to go on long walks. Oscar is not too hyper and he is a good watch dog. Also, mini dachshunds are so cute and funny. Check them out sometime. Good Luck.

I love my Yorkies, both weigh 4 lbs. Very friendly they love people and other dogs. Some Yorkies can be pricey, but I haven't paid over $500 for either one of mine, and they are very healthy. I think that if you get the smaller yorkies, under 3 1/2 or 3 lbs full grown they are likely to have health problems (not all). Good luck!!

we used to have lots of toy poodles before. they were really nice, smart, obedient dogs. they are pretty loyal too. some of them are playful and some of them are not. i also had a shih tzu, very playful and sweet. although the shih tzu requires more maintenance. right now i have a beagle, medium-sized - less maintenance because of the really short hair - they are really playful and active. she's also smart and friendly. i like all of them, so far all of my dogs, present and previous, they are really smart.

Anything cross bred with a poodle will not shed. I don't know about the personality of poodles though. My Mom just got a shihtzu and she is adorable. All puppies are going to be active.

Tibetan Spaniels are wonderful, not quite so active. Shih Tzus are fun loving and playful. We have both. Shih Tzu is probably easier to find.

Consider a Bearded Collie....they aren't small...more medium sized...but they are great dogs. They are playful, good with people, great with kids and other animals.
