Hello Neil
Its always a good bet to just go to a local course and check in with the pro shop to see about instructions, what times they have available , how much is the cost etc:
Now I would nt spend a lot of money on lessons at first, I would go to a driving range and hit some balls untill I felt comfortable with my swing, while there check out some of the other golfers who seem to be hitting the ball good. You can learn things from them.
After you have been to the range several times it may now be a good time to see the pro at your local course, by now you will know if you like to golf or not and its not for everybody.
Also part of the learning process is to read up on the rules and golf ettequette, you should do this first befor anything else, its a very important part of the game.
Good luck and enjoy this great game.
Leon

I work in Palo Alto. You should try and hit some balls first and maybe get a lesson on a driving range. Palo Alto Muni is off Embarcadero near the Palo Alto Airport. I would try there first. They have a drving range and teaching Pro's. After a few lessons you will have an idea of what to do on a course. Invest in some golf shoes and a golf glove. They really help

I'd try this: go to a course and find out about lessons. Take the lessons unless they cost an arm and a leg. If they do, check with your city parks and recreation folks - sometimes they run group courses. Go to a driving range and hit some balls. Of course you'll need some clubs so pick up something like a 5 or 7 iron second hand or at a yard sale. Just try to hit some straight balls. Get an instruction book, "Golf My Way" by Tiger is pretty good.
When it comes time to buying clubs, buy a cheap set. Spend 200 bucks and if you like the game you can always upgrade.
BUT! Get to a course and play. Find a cheap municipal course, go on a weekday and play. Driving ranges, classes, all that stuff are fine but playing is where it's at. Play with someone but don't listen to a bunch of advice from another hacker.
And have fun. Chances are you won't make the Tour, but you can play this game til you are an old guy like me. I've been playing for 40 years and still love to get out and pop a few in the lake and the woods.
Now you probably know all this and this doesn't answer where to play, but I just go into writing it...

I am not from CA. But go to a driving range and hit some balls, make sure you like the game first and see if you get frustrated easy, if you do then stop and take up something else, cause it only get's more frustrating, then if you can take it and like it, some driving ranges have PGA teaching pros, they are cheaper than going to a golf course that has a teaching pro, and watch others, see there swings, the main thing is to find the swing that works for you!!!
Hope this helps,
keith

Go to: http://local.yahoo.com/results?fr=dd-local-more&stx=golf&csz=Palo+Alto%2C+CA
It has all the golf related things (pro-shops, drving ranges, courses) that are in or near Palo Alto.
If you really get seriously into the game, and money is not a problem, you should join the Palo Alto Golf and Country Club. The info on the Country club is at: http://local.yahoo.com/details;_ylt=AjwVnn9ZO6ZoxPYsOuUJNP.HNcIF?id=21393943&state=CA&city=Palo+Alto&stx=golf&csz=Palo+Alto%2C+CA&fr=dd-local-more&ed=876bU6131Dyp70o9ELGRJRBvqDy3o7FMBxNUA0H3S7nzO_TxA7QqQ7Zmkw--&lcscb=Tvv5kKnunuL

The easiest way to learn golf like a pro is by following "The Simple Golf Swing" program. It's primarily a 31 page eBook that teaches golfers how to make solid contact with the ball, how to avoid hitting fat, how to avoid slicing, how get more power, accuracy, and consistency in your swing. Consistency being the number 1 golf skill.
You not only get the eBook though, you also receive a ton of extra material including video, lessons on putting, driving, chipping, sand play etc. Here is their official site: http://www.golfswingguru.net

Try Palo Alto Muni...
The golf instructors (golf pros) at Mariner's Point GC and Crystal Springs GC are highly rated by one of the golf magazines.

I agree with your other answer. Also you might take your friend for a ride over the hill to the coast. Half Moon Bay or Davenport would be great for a nice sunset.
