Yes there is a secret place that all parents head to once they have shut down the lights. I cannot inform you of this place as obviously you are not a parent yet, but someday hopefully we will meet up there. Best of luck and keep them lights out even though you are now aware that your folks are gone away for a short while.

David,
I think if you're old enough to play on the internet, you're old enough to understand that the question you're asking isn't true.
Now, when you're first born....aka under 1 year old, this is an actual thought children have. It's the same problem pets such as dogs have when you hide a toy from them. Their brains don't yet have the ability to recognize that their parents will come back. It's why when you play peek a boo with a child, they get so excited when you "come back".
On another level...
This isn't far off from the philosophy question:
If a tree falls in the forest, and there's no one around to hear it, does it make a sound?
Are you a first year philosophy student?

No, I think they still love you even in the small amount of it. Just keep your positive thinking of them. It's better than make yourself suffer because of that.
Try to turn on your lights by yourself and try to open the door as hard as you could. But don't expect too much. Try to live alone with your independence and busy of your work and your activities. I know it's hard to do but you'll get more benefits of that later on.

Babies and toddlers believe so because they think the world revolves around them and when you aren't there they think you may never come back and that is why they throw fits when you leave but calm down once you have been gone awhile (because their "me" centered universe focuses on something else due to their short attention spans)

When I was your age no I knew they were just sleeping right down the stairs. Proof Dad's loud snoring. To this day he still snores badly.

if by closing the door you mean they are hurled into a blackhole where time and space do not exsist, then yes they do.
