who said it's not good on mashed potatoes? Ketchup is the greatest thing since the invention of chocolate.

The secret is the crunchy crust from deep frying or frying....

For example, a if the mashed potatoes where pan fried like a potato pancake... pass the ketchup. :-)

I don't like ketchup on french fries, let alone mashed potatoes. But I think it's something about the texture of french fries - crisp, salty and oily - that makes them go better with ketchup. Mashed potatoes are soft and mushy and the ketchup seems too sweet. It's like with mashed potatoes you suddenly realize you're eating a vegetable.

They are cooked diffently. Fries, like everything that is fried, will taste better than mashed potatoes with ketchup. Look at hash browns. The potato is cut smaller but it is still fried. And I am pretty sure a baked potato is not going to taste so good with ketchup. So in conclusion, it is all in how the potato is cooked.

The ONLY time I like ketchup is on Fries !!

I would THINK it is because the acid in ketchup (from the tomato and the vinegar) helps to cut the greasy taste of the fries... while Mashed potatos should have a creamy taste that doesn't mix as well with the acids.

French fries are crunchy, mashed potatoes are mashy, like ketchup, so they form a weird red thing that merge together when combined

Is it you that is saying ketchup is only for chips, or has someone told you this?

The truth is, in culinary matters, anything is good with anything if the person eating it likes it. If you enjoy pigs intestines with marmalade, so what provided it gives you pleasure?
