Ok I feel really stupid asking this, but I found a recipe that calls for "1 chipotle chile en adobo, coarsely chopped, with 1 tablespoon sauce." I was wondering what this means? Is it some sort of canned pepper? Do most supermarkets have it?

These are chile peppers in a kind of tomato sauce.
You take the peppers out of the sauce and chop them and add 1 tbsp. of sauce from the can. This is very good stuff!

You can get these at supermarkets that have a good selection of Hispanic foods. I buy mine from a Hispanic market though. Look in your phone book or on line for a market. The people at small markets can help you find what you need and are usually very nice.
You can get more information and recipes at Gourmet Sleuth.

Good luck and happy cooking!

You can buy a small can of Chipotle Chiles in Adobo Sauce. It should be in the international food aisle of your supermarket where they have all the Mexican food ;). Or if you can find a bottle of chipotle powder, you should be able to substitute it for 2 teaspoons of powder. Also, if you can't handle spice, you my as well leave it out and just add in a tsp Dijon Mustard - seriously.

About 5 chiles or so come in a can.

Chipotle is smoked jalapeño, adobo is a sauce. You should be able to find canned chipotles en adobo in the Mexican food section. Some good brands are: Herdez, San Marcos, La Costena

What you have there is Adobe made with Chipotle peppers instead of Anchos and Guajillos peppers. You can get the Chipotle Adobe at the market in the mexican food section with the other canned chiles

Yes, it's in a can and most supermarkets do have them. It's in a little can like el pato tomato sauce or sliced green chiles in the international or ethnic food section of the store. Chipotles in adobo are smoked jalapeno peppers in this spicy tomato sauce that's similar to enchilada sauce or tradational thick adobo sauce.

Chipotle peppers are smoked canned jalapenos in spicy sauce. If your supermarket has them they will be with the mexican foods a small can goes a long way, but you can freeze the leftovers and use a little at a time.

You can buy chipotle in adobo at any grocery store, usually in the same aisle that has salsa. It's a smoked jalapeno in adobo sauce, which is a vinegary sauce. So, for your recipe, just take out one pepper from the can and add some sauce. Super good, but super hot.

Your going to think this weird but you can find them at Denninigers on King St, just up from Wellington, or between Wellington and Walnut, down the street from the Forbidden City chinese restaurant, , they are with the food products along the aisle near the hot food counter, I was there a few weeks back, and got some Cajun File powder.
