Sounds like this is "social" pool that we are playing....if so...you get the "solids"....you are playing what around here is called "bar rules"......BCA rules are opposite....even if you were to make all of the stripes on the "snap"....the table is still open.....you might not have a good shot on the 8 ball and thus choose to take the solids.......it is such an ugly feeling for your opponent to have all of his balls there and you not have a shot on the 8 ball.....he will "d" up and drive you nuts until he makes you go for the rack for the next game!!......enjoy the match!!

The table is still open until someone makes a ball on a shot after the break.

At that point the person can pick which ever they want.
So say on the break 2 solids and 1 stripe is made, then on the next shot you make another stripe...but you think the solids are better split, you can choose to be 'solids'.

it's open until one of you sink a ball. If you were to sink two solids and a stripe off the break then the choice would be yours if you want to be solids or stripes.

Still an open table

If you make at least one of each (strip and solids)

We play that you have the choice of which to take. However you must make a ball of your choice. If you miss your next shot then your opponent has choice.

Since you have hit in at least one solid and one stripe then it is your call.
