Routine use of steroids with cats is being implicated in cat's having bone marrow suppression. Only a vet can tell you if there is treatment and what the prognosis might be.

Leukemia and FIV can also cause this condition and the cat should be tested for those, which I assume any vet would have done first off.

sounds as if it could be feline leukemia--very contagious and very fatal. i hope yo friend is taking kitty to the vet for treatment--i hope it is not fev.
