My Mother used it for 6 months and said that the saline was the reason she never got the flu during the season.(she was on oxygen and cleaned before lubing the inside of her nostrils)

not necessarily. they are mainly used to keep the nasal passage clean, so that when she uses her oxygen by inserting the nose piece when she turns on the oxygen the germs and dust won't be carried into her lungs and cause an infection.

Saline by itself isn't going to protect you from the flu - the single most important thing you can do is to wash your hands frequently, and keep your hands away from your eyes, nose and mouth. Germs love mucous membranes, that's like their gateway into the body. Rinsing your nose out with saline wash may help flush germs out of your nose, but it seems like the ointment would just give the germs a place to stick and breed. If your mom's on oxygen she's obviously not in the best health, so I hope she's able to get the flu shot.
