Did you mean a step-mom/dad's niece? Also, were you wondering if YOU would contract a genetic disease simply by marrying? The answer to that is no. If you meant to ask about your offspring, the only genetic diseases that could be passed on are those already present in your family or her family.

Or did you mean your first cousin? If so, partially the same answer... only the genetic diseases already present. However, there have been instances of mental retardation, deformity, and other genetic problems associated with the offspring of close relations. How true or prevalent they are, I don't know. Your biggest issue here would be the legality/acceptibility of the union.

Nothing you can ever do at this point will change your genetic tendency for any disease. Your genes are set from the moment you were concieved

Marrying your close relations can cause problems only for your children. If you are a carrier for a genetic disease and spawn with someone who is also a carrier (like a close relation of you), you're kids will have a 50% chance of showing the disease.

Scientists have found out that the chances of your offspring having retardation or other genetic disease is no greater than with any other person you marry.

But the LAW prohibits you marrying your 1st cousin, umless you are over the age of 65. Find someone else.

If you marry your first cousin (your parent's niece), yes, you are at risk for your offspring having a genetic defect. You, personally, do not get the disease or defect. The children do.

I have a great aunt that married her first cousin, and both their children were born with dwarfism.

Well, here in the US, that is illegal in most states.

And you can't catch a disease like Diabetes.

If you are talking about it being passes on to your kids, Diabetes should be the least of your worries. There are countless deformations and problems children born out of incest that close can have!

If a disease is inherited, you can have it without marrying anyone. However, if you married your relative, your CHILDREN would be at risk. You may want to look at bigdigest.com to see if they have more facts.
