I always make my roasts that way - in before work and out by the time I get home. Just brown a roast that has sat at room temperature for a couple of hours in a frying pan with butter. Put it in the crock pot with onion and 2-3 bay leaves, salt, pepper and crushed garlic. Add about a cup and a half of beef broth or bullion and slap the lid on it. Cook on low for 8 hours or on high for 4 hours. Transfer the roast to a carving platter and the liquid to a small pot. Bring the liquid to a boil and add a roux, whisking constantly until thickened. Strain the gravy and serve with the roast.

Poke slits all over the roast and insert a clove (or half if their large) in each slit. Brown all sides of the roast. Place in crock pot, Sprinkle a little brown sugar and soy sauce on top. Add enough water to just cover. Cook for 5 hrs. Add carrots, onions potatoes what ever and cook for 3 more hours.

It has to be a tough cut, (that is the point of the crock pot). I have used tender cuts before and they just come out soupy. If you are adding vegatbles they should be cut large enough that they don't overcook before the roast is done, peas can be added a few minutes (20) before serving. Starting the roast from frozen works well and saves thaw time too.

Meat, carrots, potatoes, peas, and onions. After the meat and veggies are done cooking, add a can of brown gravy to the crock pot, to make it rich and hearty. I do it all the time, it turnes out YUMMY! I love pot roast in oven or in crock pot!

I like to cover the meat with beef broth or stock and add an envelope of dry onion soup mix. It's just enough flavoring and makes the meat really moist. Cooking time will depend on whether you are cooking on high or low and how much the meat weighs.

Do all those fancy things above but it doesnt need a lot of liquid, just about half way and put veggies on the bottom first.
