There are a number of things that could cause a mouth sore such as bacteria, virus, fungal infection, tooth abcess, sharp edge from a a broken tooth or filling could be some of the culprit. If the sore has lasted more than a week after your dentist check it. Meanwhile avoid things that irritate it like acidic food (orange juice, lemon juice).also check out American Dental Association link below for photos of some of the more common mouth sores.

these are most likely ulcers also called "canker sores" they are caused by acidic foods and soda. go to your pharmacy and ask for something to help with it. they sell lots of over the counter remedies. i know this will sound gross to most people, but buttermilk will heal them fast. just hold it in your mouth where the sore is for a couple minutes 2 or 3 times a day. Hydrogen peroxide helps too. it burns like crazy but it helps heal them and keep them from being as sore.

Sound like you could have contracted herpes (either complex from oral sex or simplex from someone with cold sores) One other possibility is they are a sign of a build up of toxins in your system. This happens to my oldest son and they go away as soon as he has a bowel movement. Sorry to be so graphic but it's the truth.
I would see a regular doctor first. If it's not one of these he'll refer you to your dentist.

Try rinsing your mouth a few times a day with Listerine. If that doesn't help - try your dentist.

it could be from something you ate.
something hot, sour or spicy would do it.
try not to aggrivate them and get some oral-gel if they're really painful
