I was talking to an AF recruiter about being a linguist, and he said that the AF really needs good linguist. My mom said linguists get all the dangerous jobs, which doesn't make sense to me. If they're so hard to train and keep, and they can do their work indoors, why would their jobs be dangerous? My mom doesn't have any military background and I'm wondering if she's trying to scare me.
By the way, is it true you can get linguist garenteed in your contract?

Yes, you can get your job guaranteed in your contract. But, if you dont pass the training for it, they can re-class you into whatever they need.

Depending on what language, linguists can get stuck in some pretty bad situations. Arabic speakers are needed in Iraq, and they go on patrols and all kinds of nasty jobs because they are needed to talk to the locals. You could also get stuck working in a prison working with interrogators with all kinds of nasty people. Or, you could just be stuck at a desk translating papers and recordings all day.

I'm not sure about AF, but Navy linguists do not necessarily have the "dangerous" jobs. It's all dependent on what language. Of course, Farsi is in high demand right now. Spanish is not, but it's a good language to learn. Then there is Cantonese. So many to choose from. I know that Navy linguists go on ships for a few months (they hit some awsome ports) and some of the Farsi people can go over to the Middle East and go undercover. It's a hard job, but you can travel to some really cool places. Also, Navy is a guarentee, but you need to go theough like 2 yrs of schooling. Most of your enlistment!! Crazy!

Good luck w/ your decision.

an AF linguist is a safe job...wont be out in the field doing interrogations, prob be working intercepts. very stressful job though, both to learn and to perform. Last i looked if you qualified for a AFSC it could be guaranteed as part of your enlistment contract, as long as you didnt disqual yourself in basic or tech school.
