Apologise profusely to the cashier who has to go and weigh them, but never to the people standing behind them in the queue?

That's weigh, not weigh

O.K. I live in a very backward country. Switzerland. When we buy fruit and veg at a supermarket they are not pre-packed, we can choose how much, but then we weigh them and put a scannable label on them or the bag.

Oh. this happens in our local supermarket in france.
I guess they apologise to the cashier because it's an inconvenience to the cashier. If the people behind them want to get huffy, they can always move to a different cashier/lane

You know, I haven't run into that in years.
All the supermarkets in my area do the weighing on the scanners at the cashiers checkout. Isn't that funny. I thought the days of weighing your stuff was long gone.

Where you at? I'm in Ontario Canada

Switzerland isn't backward...I don't think anyone meant that...I didn't...I thought maybe rural small town supermarket.

We too can pick out how many we want, it's not prepacked....but the scanner at the cashier has a built in scale....some stores you have to write a code before going to the cash, some you don't...again, might depend on product. The stores I go to, only stuff in bulk bins require you write the code on a tag.

I would guess that it's because it's immediately obvious that they've inconvenienced the cashier (who leaves to weigh the item), but it may not be as immediately obvious that they've inconvenienced the customers behind them.

What a pleasure it must be to still live in a country where people are honest enough for this practice to continue. I live in America, and I've never experienced anything like this in my lifetime. There are scales built into the scanners at the registers where cashiers have to weigh any items to be sold by weight.

I don't know, but how do you know people aren't lying when they put the label on their own bag? We used to have a sweet shop that sold penny sweets like that (where you weigh them yourself and stick a sticky thing on) but people would stick on the sticky and then add more sweets to it.
Anyway, perhaps they apologise to the cashier because they actually have to get up and move but the people behind them don't have to do anything, and I tend to blank out in a queue anyways.

I never added more sweeties by the way, I was bought up not to tell porkys...

In Canada we can also pick out and bag our own produce but we don't weigh it ourselves. On the scanner the cashier uses there is a scale built in. she places it on the scanner and types in the code. The weight and amount is on the computer. Some people forget to write out the code and then we have to wait for the cashier to look it up. That is kind of the same. (because they do apologize to the cashier but not to everyone else.)

Thankfully fruit and vegetables are weighed at the till in England these days, it was a pain before we had this technology and yes, I often wondered myself why the person who forgot to weigh apologised to the cashier and never to anyone in the queue behind them, maybe they think its their right to be dumb and that people will automatically accept it of them, not one bit, its annoying, happy shopping.

I'm a cashier and where i work we have fruits and veggies that we have to weigh. But if they did tell us how much it weighs, we still have to re-do it. because they could be lying to us to get it cheaper.

But i do get some people that do apologies about it. but its really not that big of a deal....everyone in their life will have to do such.
