Are you feeding him high quality food like Nutro, Science Diet, or IAMS? If dogs have poor nutrition they sometimes do this. If he doesn't stop I would ask a vet.

It's quite common...try and vary his diet to make sure he is on his optimum ammount of vitamins... and get to the poo before he does. Say no strongly to him and remove the offending article. I read a blog from a dog owner whilst having a look for some answers for you. One dog treated it as a game. Make sure he is then perhaps out of the picture when you pick it up. At least you don't have a King Charles Cavalier with a hankering for what the cat leaves behind!

have you punished him for toiletting in the house? This can be a cause of sh1t eating. Just clean it up as soon as he goes.
I can not understand why people keep recommending to spray stuff on the poo to make it taste nasty. By the time you have found the spray bottle, gone back outside to coat the turd, the dog will have eaten it. If you have time to spray it, you have time to pick it up.

No-one is really sure why dogs do this. It is very common and is known as coprophagia or coprophagy.

B**ches eat the faeces of their pups as a way of cleaning up after them so although it is as you say 'minging' to us it isn't quite so disgusting to dogs.

Dogs are scavengers and left to their own devices will eat all sorts of faeces - horse, rabbit, cat to name a few.

Some people think that the dog either has a deficient diet or it is passing faeces which still contain nutrients but, as I say, no-one really knows.

There are things you can add to your dog's diet or sprinkle on the faeces - I'm not going to list them as I'm not totally convinced that any of them work.

In my experience the best way to deal with it is to manage it. By this I mean you clean up after your pup immediately so that there are no faeces lying about for him to eat and you teach him the command 'leave'..

You teach him 'leave' using food. You can do this by holding food or a dog treat in your hand and letting him sniff and fuss to try to get the food. Usually they give up and stand back briefly to try to work out how to get the food.

When he stands off, say 'leave', then give him the food. The idea is that as he 'leaves', you pin a word on his action, and then reward him.

You have to keep doing this over and over but not for more than about five minutes per session until he begins to understand the word 'leave'.

You can then try putting a treat on the floor and telling him to leave - you might have to make a cage with your fingers to stop him getting the food to start with.

Having taught your dog to leave and rewarded him every time try telling him to 'leave' his poo. Put him on a lead so that he can't get it anyway, tell him to leave - don't yell it - and if he hesitates at all, reward him with a dog treat. Then clean up quickly before he gets it and undoes all your work.

Don't start shouting 'leave' at him before he knows what it means and don't be too disgusted by his behaviour - it is much more common than you think!

I know it isnt always possible to prevent them and I know what a problem it can be, my doberman did it for years and nothing stopped him until a very kindly vet gave me a tip. Get a spray bottle and mix water and mustard .. or a really strong chilli sauce, spray on the poo ... it wont take him long to stop ! Unpleasant for him, but harmless, hope this helps lol; !

my labrador did this. i found that it was trying to hide it from me or other animals. i would say it was a case of the pup not being confident in marking its territory and its removing the evidence

some dogs just do this. he could be bored! Is he left outside with it or does he eat it right after he poops? They have certain food you can buy that will make it taste nasty, among other products.
