But it depends on the type of subway car (there are three or four major car types on different lines), whether it is on the express or local track, and the distance in-between stations.

The top speed is 50 mph. The trains were geared down to insure better safety, but some do a little better (I guess they didn't adjust those subway cars). I know someone who drives a train and he told me that the best he's been able to do is 48mph.

Not very fast considering other trains. I would guess about 40 mph for the express train like the 1 that stretches across the length of Manhattan from Battery Park to Washington Heights. Yet they are always breaking down.

If its not express, those thing can go about 45-50 MPH, but if its not express it goes frfom about 10 sometimes to 20 MPH
