Even if you say something to them most likely they aren't going to listen! My dad use to do the same thing both me and my sister both have asthma and my dad still smoked around us. I got really bad there was a year that I was going to the hospital 4 or 5 times a month. My doctor wrote my dad a note saying that he needed to quit smoking around us. When I gave him the note he ripped it up and got mad and said that the doctor didn't know what the hell he was talking about!! I tried and tried to get him to stop smoking and guess what he NEVER did!! Last October he died from congestive heart failure his Lungs where so BLACK that the doctor thought he quit smoking years ago!! I don't understand why someone would do that to themselves! I wish parents could see what they were doing to there children also..... my dad was hard headed and I truly believe that he didn't know actually how bad smoking was and I think that there are a lot of people out there that don't know either!! Good Luck

People care more about satisfying their own craving than caring for their children. Smoking is bad for people. Second hand smoke is bad for people. There is no way around that. anyone who gets mad and tells everyone to mind their own business has a major problem. (children need someone to defend them when their own parents refuse to)
Where I live smoking is banned almost everywhere and there has been talk about banning it from places such as vehicles with children in them. (I think it is child abuse to subject a child to a parent's smoking)
Just because there are worse things going on doesn't mean we should ignore this. That is silly.

My husband and I are both smokers. I quit when I was pregnant, why I started again, that's a different story. All I can say is that it is totally selfish to smoke around your children. The people who subject their kids to 2nd hand smoke are total morons. My husband and I would never dream of smoking around our daughter. When we go to a restaurant with her we eat in the non smoking section.
As a smoker I have to say it is a really stupid habit, one that I really want to quit and will again soon. My motivation is the throught of dying prematurely and my daughter not having her Mommy around when she needs her.
I'm sorry but in response to others. It is OUR business to help take care of the kids, they are our future.

First much agreed that smoking around children in any envirnoment is wrong. If one makes the decision to smoke that is their right. But they need not to in an enclosed area around their children. For leading by example, please this habit is not the worst a child picks up from a parent. What about the outrageous habits or situations children live in that are far worse than this. And please remember while you are against smoking this is America and people have rights.

I'm 50yrs old and both my parents smoked around us all our lives, so if I've lived this long I guess it wasn't so bad then, But I dint smoke around people in an enclosed area. In public open space yes, but I'll move away from the people, cuz I don't think its right for them to have part in my cigarette just cuz I want to smoke.

I agree with you and I don't buy the crap about them being uneducated about the causes, it's written on every pack of cigerettes and is all over the tv all the time. There's no way that they can not know the reprocusions of what they're doing... I think that they're just selfish and can only think of they're needs... I don't understand it because when I got pregnant, my boyfriend quit smoking... period, at 8 weeks along because we didn't want to expose our baby to 2nd smoke, I don't understand how parents can do that to their babies.

Honestly how can they not know??? Any idiot knows that cigaretts are bad for them alone let alone the second hand smoke to others....i dont know why they do it...prolly cuz the addication is stronger than their caring for others, its selfish.
Next time you see that you should roll your window down and ask them.... Or ask them if they enjoy giving their kids lung cancer??? its so sad

i dont get it either. the parents are being very selfish by doing this and it is WRONG. if parents want to harm their bodies, whatever, that is their choice, but dont put that harm upon the children and make them breathe the crap in. grrrr. it irritates me too, or when a pregnant woman smokes. its like "hello, dont you know that your baby is "smoking" when you smoke???" why would you do that????

Habits, huh? My parents never smoked and I smoke. My mom's dad smoked and neither her or her sister smoke. My fiance's parents both smoke and he doesn't smoke. Neither of their parents smoked and they both smoke.
And now for my Denis Leary rant:
If it's so damn bad...why aren't cigarettes illegal? Come on! All these bans...no smoking in restaurants, bars, buildings, cars...WTF! Why aren't politicians in DC on the tobacco industry's door step shutting them down? Because the tobacco industry buys politicians. And why aren't doctors doing the same thing? Because it keeps them in business. It's the circle of life, people! And until tobacco is illegal in this country, I'm going to keep smoking around my child.
