Virtually any antibiotic may lead to diarrhea although this is not common with penicillin although I would add that there is almost no condition or circumstance for which penicillin remains appropriate due to the level of resistance. The tendency of an antibiotic to cause diarrhea depends upon the condition being treated, the specific antibiotic, the dose of the antibiotic, and the antibiotic's effect of the normal bacteria in the bowel. Serious antibiotic related diarrhea is unfortunately on the rise perhaps due to the increased use of 'potent' antibiotics such as Cipro.

Yes, diarrhea can be one of the side effects. If you are having severe watery diarrhea and stomach cramps you should stop taking the meds and contact your doctor.

If the diarrhea is mild, not severe, you may want to discuss it with your doctor, but mild diarrhea is not uncommon with penicillin and not something to worry about.

Any type of antibiotic will give you diarrhea. My son is on some right now for strep throat. Anytime I give him an antibiotic I also give him 1 tab of acidophilus. By doing this he never gets diarrhea. Hope this helps. Good Luck.

Yes, a Very Serious One: "Clostridium difficle" (Sp?), It's Unlikely That you Have this, Probably Some Other Diarrhea.

Yes, all antibiotics do. I've found that yogurt helps alot though. Eating it helps restore the natural bacteria in your digestive system to keep it on track.
