My son's preschool class just got told that someone in their class has had lice and they checked the kids and just about everyone of them had it.

What can I use to kill them besids the toxic shampoos? He doesn't like sittin still and i'm afraid he would get stuff like that in his eyes or mouth.

i know to like wash all bedding, pilliows, steam clean the couch, put stuffed toys up in a bag for 2 weeks or in the dryer, and boil all brushes and combs. Is there anything else?

You can use just about any oil based product.
Baby oil gel is good because it sticks and suffocates the lice.
Leave it in his hair for a couple hours and then comb out his hair.
Dont forget to wash bedding, put pillows through dryers, stuffed animals in bags (or if you are in a place where it get hot a hot car will kill them over a day).
Spray furniture, vacuume, and hope that it works.
You can also check out headlice.org.
Yes treat everyone at home and warn guests if they have been over for play.
Now for the preschool... find out what they are doing to allow lice to spread.
Do they store coats/hats/mittens together?
Napping stuff together?
Don't forget to investigate because you dont want it back again.

There isn't really much else you can do. You know the majority of it. I use to work in a center and when this would happen we washed all clothing like materials (even dress up clothes) and all pillows and stuffed animals were put in plastic bags or in the dryer on high heat for about 20 to 30 minutes. Anything hair related should be washed or boiled also. Everyone that is around the child should be treated. Bed sheets should be changed every night and spray your house everyday. I had it twice when I was a little girl and my mom sprayed every piece of furniture i came in contact with. Hair spray is a good thing to put in your childs hair because lice does not like it. It is hard work but it will work. Hope it all clears up.

You said "son" right? That means your kid is a boy. How about trying to have your kid's head cut off? As in really short? He's a boy anyway. And then before he takes a bath YOU wash his head and scrub it nicely ok? After you've washed his head, then he takes a bath so he won't be shy to see him naked while you're washing his head. That way, you have this assurance that you've washed it nicely.

I hope somehow I was able to help you. That's the only solution I thought of because I heard once my grandma talking about it before so why not give it a try. He is a boy anyway. It will be a big problem if it was a girl. Lice LIKES the color white so when you scrub his head with shampoo it will have bubbles which is color white. I'm sure the lice will get attracted to it and when you wash it they'll be in it too.

That's all I can think of. I hope it works. ^__^

Not too long ago i saw on the news a story about a guy who invented a special hair dryer that kills lice, due to the dry heat, so if you really don't like the shampoo then you could buy one of those or maybe a hair salon owns one and would treat your son. I

I just did more research and it is called the Lousebuster and is not available until 2008 so i guess you will have to stick to the shampoo.

yes treat everyone in the house. and if you don't like the shampoo.( you should use it though it works the best on it) you can try olive oil. put it in his hair with a shower cap over his head and leave it in there all night. wash it out in the morning and use a louse brush to get out all the knits and lice out of his hair. if this does not work you can always shave his head. = ( but we had lice as kids and my mom after using the shampoo and it not working tried this and it worked. You know old at home treatments work. Good luck and remember wash everyone and all the animals should get a lice and flea bath too. good luck. oh and put a rag over his face when he has the shampoo so he does not get it in his eyes and tell him that if he moves his eyes will hurt really bad. good luck .

Sorry to hear about the dilemma. I would personally use the shampoo, b/c it does work the best. I honestly can't think of anything else you can use other that "home remedys" which u can look for those online. Also, you definatley need to treat the entire home. Get a couple of cans of Lysol and spray everywhere, and wash all the sheets and pillowcases. Remember to spray the lysol around the couch and where ever the family has contact a lot. Mop the floors, etc. Basically, do a spring cleanning around the house. GOOD LUCK!!

Best to treat everyone in the house, keep your kids home until they are fully treated, dont let people into your house or they can catch it as well. Take them into a hair salon they will usually treat these things, or into your dr. office they can give you a prescription for lice killing shampoo thats safe on kids. Maybe call your dr first and let them know whats going on in case they dont want you in the office lol. Make sure you wash all bedding in hot hot water. Actually i dont think lice can live long on carpets and things like that. Make sure you wash all furniture, I also have heard that washing your hair in mayo and egg shells works very well at killing lice. My nephew caught this at head start and its NO fun!!!! Make sure everyone who has had contact with you guys is aware of whats going on so they can check themselves and treat themselves if need be. Lice spreads like weeds so be careful!! GOODLUCK

Yes treat everyone in the house!!! I have an in-home daycare and I have had parents tell me that you can put hair grease on your hair and leave it on there until the evening and the wash out with dish-washing liquid. I have never had lice so I don't know how effective it will be but it worked for her kids the last time they had it!! Good Luck!

I have a friend who had to deal with this a year or so ago.

Oils.....

Oils coat the exoskeleton or 'skin' of adult lice, basically keeping them from getting oxygen and ultimately suffocating them. A study conducted by the Harvard School of Public Health found that lice that were submerged in olive oil for two hours died. However, lice submerged in olive oil for only one hour recovered. Vegetable oils or a combination of vegetable oil with essential oils may be applied to the head (after thorough combing to remove nits) to thoroughly saturate the hair and coat the lice. Then the head may be covered with a shower cap or towel. After a minimum of two hours, the oil can be washed out (probably requires washing 2-3 times). Next, examine the hair for eggs and remove any that are seen. The process may be repeated every four days to kill emerging lice before they mature and can lay new eggs. The same premise applies to the use of mayonnaise on the hair to remove lice. Synthetic oils, such as kerosene or motor oil, are dangerous and should never be used.

For really resistant lice, essential oils can be added to contribute to the efficacy of the vegetable oil, but a skin test should be performed, as some people are sensitive to the oils. To do a skin test, apply a drop of oil to the inside of the elbow and check the area after several hours. If any signs of irritation are seen, do not add essential oils. If irritation is experienced during treatment, shampoo the mixture out immediately. Here's a recipe for a natural lice treatment:

2 ounces vegetable oil (e.g., olive oil)
20 drops tea tree essential oil (melaleuca)
10 drops rosemary essential oil
10 drops lavender essential oil
10 drops lemon essential oil (may be found in spice section of grocery store)

To use, combine the ingredients and perform a skin test. If no sensitivity is experienced, apply the mixture to dry hair. Cover hair with a shower cap or even a plastic bag, Leave the mixture on for 1-2 hours. Shampoo the hair 2-3 times to remove the oil.

I've also heard that using mayonaise can work. Apply the mayo and then cover the child's head with a bathing cap to sit for a couple of hours. Use dishwashing liquid to clean the mayo out.

Go to the salon and buy a bottle of paul mitchel tea tree oil shampoo and conditioner. If everyone washes their hair and conditions their hair with the stuff all the time this should help get rid of and prevent the problem in the future

I worked at a school in a classroom with children who came to school with lice and fleas. Yes fleas~ I washed and conditioned with tea tree oil shampoo and conditioner all the time and never got it once.
